Yoshi - Wings Clipped

Postby Hannes » Sat Jan 21, 2012 3:41 pm

Hey all!

So, we clipped Yoshi's wings today. It was the first time since we got him (he was clipped then).
He seemed a bit shocked, and has been all day today. Ususally he talks alot, sings, chirps and whistles, but today he is very quiet.

He hans't really understood that he can't fly anymore, cause he has tried and failed...he hit his beak on the floor, and started to bleed a little.

We got very worried, but he seems fine, but very shook up...

So, I was wondering...any tips how to go about a newly wing clipped bird, that has been used to flight. And how long will it take until he realizes that he cant fly...cause the belly dives he's been doing today (not from too high places) cant be good for him and his little body.

we've lowered his cage, but like i said, he hasn't really understood that he can't fly, and seems confused, and in shock...

Cheers bird lovers!

I have no advice as I live with flighted birds and consider clipping a very bad practice.

I am glad that your bird seems to be okay though, after hitting the floor =). Look out for him and see if you notice any changes in his behaviour, and if you are worried, take him to a vet!

It'll just take a few more shocking falls until he realizes he can't fly any more. Then he'll probably be a bit phobic of flying and lose self-confidence. He will rely more heavily on you because he can't rely on his body anymore.
