Moving in together

Postby cml » Fri Feb 17, 2012 4:53 pm

Everything has progressed well when Stitch and Leroy were in their separate cages and they have displayed every sign of parallell behaviour I know, and acted like a flock. Therefore we decided upon letting them meet again, but this time in a more safe environment, their new aviary cage.

Not only is the cage safer as Leroy crashes into walls, its big enough for them to have plenty of space for their own as well as for flying. It is also terra incognita, niether of them has seen it before and there are no territorial feelings for it. Neutral ground.

I think this was a good choice. Ideally I would liked them to meet outside, but with Leroy being the clumsy bird he is, this was a better choice. Everything has gone well, they are now sleeping on the same perch =), if not just beside beside eachother. Everything was cool during the evening, except feeding time, there were a few squabbles then but nothing serious, just testing each others boundries. Of course I had 2 different bowls in the cage, but I guess it was more fun trying to eat from the same bowl (and not succeding).

I will keep you updated on our progress, and post a few pictures tomorrow!

I think its going well! At least its going a heck of a lot better than I had expected it to. They have been quite good towards each other, no major fights during the whole day.
Stitch is trying to prove himself by sometimes following Leroy and then doing a little launch for him, but Leroy just leaves and then they start the ritual over a little time later. Other than that they can sometimes share a perch or even sit close to each other.

I think they are trying to decide who's the boss, and in what sitations some actions are okay, whilst in some they are not. They are also deciding who´s toy is who's.

Eating is still problematic, although better today than yesterday. Even with multiple bowls its more fun to fight for the same bowl. We solved it today by preparing something we knew Stitch loves, but Leroy hates, and giving Leroy pellets.

Anyone got any advice other than what we are doing so far =)?

Here's a pic of them two in their new aviary cage!
