From outside aviary to inside cage?

Postby rebeccaturpeinen » Tue Feb 21, 2012 12:57 pm

I have been looking for a friend for my Crimson Rosella, he is a boy and could definitly use a friend. So now I have found a little girl.... problem is, she is not handraised and lives in an outside aviary at the moment.

She is about 6 months old. It is not possible to find Rosellas as 'pets' here meaning handraised and use to people. I would have to special order one and I dont know how long that would take.

Would it be a bad idea to buy this little Rosella? Is she young enough to adjust to being a pet? I am going to visit her tomorrow. My Rosella has no problem living inside and I am assuming he was an aviary bird before we got him.

Please share your thoughts....

No, I think it will be fine!

Leroy, our bronze winged pionus which we got about 2 months ago was an aviary bird and was parent raised. He too was around 6 months when we got him.

He's adapted fine. He was really responsive to training as well, even if thats regressed a little atm and we have been able to introduce him to Stitch as well.

Based on our experience I think its very possible to make it work.

Hej cml!

Thanks so much for your reply, I was so unsure untill I read your post, it was so positive :)

As soon as I saw her I fell in love... so I bought her!! She is getting a complete health check tomorrow at the vet and then I can start the taming process. She seems curious so I am really looking forward to it.

Ill take some pictures of her soon :)

Thanks again for your reply!!

No problem, I wanted to share my experience from the same situation =).

It has worked out fine for us, Stitch and Leroy now lives in the same indoor aviary cage I built, and they like it very much. At first they were a little hesitant towards each other but now that they know each others boundries, they really enjoy each others company. Stitch even flies to the cage to be with Leroy, even if he's out having fun.

Hey cml!

Unfortunatly.... she was sick. We took her for a complete healthcheck, couldnt risk her contaminating my Joe. So the vet took x-rays and those showed her liver was twice the size it should be. He couldnt really tell why but he knew for sure she couldnt be helped and wouldnt have a good life. So we called the breeder who, I think, was really suprised and took her back. It was hard to leave her though... its amazing how attached you can get to these little buggers after just two days.... He had to put her in isolation in a shed... it broke my heart. I promised her a home and two days later she was all alone.....

Im going to wait a bit before I start looking for another Rosella... maybe I wait untill I can get one handreared.
