How do I keep my budgies healthy?

Postby Skip » Sat Mar 03, 2012 11:47 pm

I know I'm late, but one of my new years resolution is to make my birds healthy.

You guys know about everything about keeping birds healthy. So I wanna get advice from you guys (then look it up online)!

One more thing, how long should I fast them before training? I wanna train them but they are never hungry!

Thanks

I dont think it is essential for you at all to fast them before training, normally it can be solved by simply not offering certain things they like in the bowl, and they only get it with you. once they have figured that out they will save some room for the treats (if you have regular trainingsessions). For example millet spray usually work wonders for smaller birds (if it is fresh ofc) what you want then is to never feed them millet in their bowl, if you use seedmixes they quite commonly have millet in them. try find one without millet and their prolly motivated enough by the milletspray you offer them. if you feed them pellets same again, never hang a milletspray or put whatever your using for treats in the bowl. I know a couple of instances where milletspray has been used and the birds hasn't been that motivated by it, buy a new batch the previous one might have been spoiled. a simple solution as that sometimes resolves the matter.

might add that sometimes it is required to train before feedingtimes etc, becouse some birds just wont be motivated enough by the treats, but in that case I'd say check a normal feeding schedule, and train them half an hour before their feedingtime, no changes in amount of food you offer or the timeschedule, atleast not to begin with.

To keep your budgies healthy: feed them a variety of fruit and veg every day, feed them pellets rather than seeds (if you can get pellets, if not, feed a good quality seed or sprout your seeds), keep their minds healthy by giving them plenty of foraging toys and other toys to keep their minds busy and stimulated, etc. keep them healthy and happy!
