Help with first day alone

Postby brfussne » Wed Mar 07, 2012 12:52 pm

I brought my Black Headed Caique home late last night around 8pm. I immediately put it in its cage to get use to its new surroundings & I knew it was bed time for the Caique since its lights out at the bird store at 7pm. I covered its cage about 15 minutes after putting it in and the Caique fell asleep right away. Bright & early this morning it was pretty happy go lucky. It was very talkative & chirpy. I would occasionally leave the room to get something and it would then chirp loudly as if calling me back. I think it's still afraid of its new home. Tomorrow is my only long shift out of the week, I'll be at work from 10am-6:30pm. I'm worried my little buddy is going to be too afraid to be alone and thus be loud and possibly scream while I'm gone. Should I leave its cage covered while I'm at work to calm it or take a risk and leave it uncovered?

I would leave him uncovered, it will give him time to get used to his new surroundings without being disturbed. Just be sure he knows where his food and water is. He will be fine. Once he has settled in more you can start hiding treats in his toys and that to keep him busy when your on your long shift and maybe an extra toy or 2. For now though him getting used to where he is will give him enough to keep him occupied.

Who cares if he screams? You won't be home to hear it

Just go about things normally and let him get used to your way of life cause this is how it's going to be. He's going to be scared of things regardless if you baby him through them or not so you might as well just jump straight to how things will be.

Don't cover the cage so he can see things and go about his birdy business. It's probably good for him to have some alone time to get used to his cage anyway.
