How many toys do your parrots have in total?
How often do you change them round?
How many do you keep in the cage at one time?
How often do you buy new toys?

What about perches?
What type are they? How many do you have in the cage?

How much of that time is spent directly interacting with your parrot? Minimum 1 hour, average 2 hours per bird.
How often do you train your parrot and how long for? Varies, some days twice a day, other times not for two weeks for Ollie. Harlie at least once per day (taming)
How long does your parrot get left completely alone for? (when you go shopping/work etc) 6 hours on average, sometimes 8 hours, on 3 days a week less than 4 hours. neither are completely alone as next to each other.

Do your parrots have/had any behavioural issues? Yes/No
Did you get your parrot with the issue or did it develop after? Had since baby, so after.
Did you manage to improve or cure the behaviour issue? Plucking- cured, biting-95% to 99% improved

Do your birds ever go outside? Rarely and not at all
If no why not? Lack of warm enough weather and too frightened.
If yes how long for and how often? 15 -30 mins, rarely

How does your parrots cages compare to the size reccommended for you species? Minimum, undersized, larger than reccommended? Kili's is minimum recommended, Truman's I don't even know if they have a recommendation for Cape Parrots. It's the size I would recommend but it's probably above typical for parrots of similar size.

If minimum size, what are your reasons for that? When I first got Kili, I was told she'd be fine in the cockatiel cage I had from a previous bird. Within the first week I realized this was not going to work. So I bought what at the time seemed like a huge upgrade cage (18x18x32). Since then I've heard lots of people saying that's too small. What's funny about word of mouth cage size recommendations is that they keep getting bigger and bigger. There really is some kind of minimum out there and I think we can agree that bigger is generally better but not always possible. The reason I don't change her cage is because it's still holding up, she's very used to it, and she doesn't use most of the available space anyway. She's just pretty mellow and sits around most of the day and becomes more active when I'm around. She flies some but not much when she's out. Also she goes out in the aviary and to the park. So she gets a diversity of activities so I don't think it's a huge deal that she's in such a cage. Some day I will get a bigger cage for her but this is not priority right now.
If larger than reccommended roughly how much larger? Truman's cage is probably larger than recommendations for African Grey. Part of the reason is I had never seen a Cape Parrot till I got him so I wasn't completely sure what cage to get. I scaled Kili's mass to Truman's (times 3) and found a cage with a volume increased by that factor. Turned out it is disproportionately bigger because by volume Truman is only 1.3 times bigger. Still it's a good cage for him because he is playful and active.

How many toys do your parrots have in total? A ton. Beats me. Probably a hundred but I never really cared to count.
How often do you change them round? 1 toy gets changed every 2-4 weeks. Everything gets changed completely during major cleanings every 3 months or so.
How many do you keep in the cage at one time? 2-5
How often do you buy new toys? Once every 2-3 months or feel like it

What about perches? Same time as toys
What type are they? How many do you have in the cage? Perches with and without park, rope perches, swings... usually 4 for Kili, 6 for Truman
How often do you swap them round? During major cleanings every 3 months, but then I change out everything and the layout

How much time does your parrot spend out of his cage minimum and maximum time on average? Minimum: none (I'm away), Maximum (all day, take them with me), those are more exceptions than the rule. Generally 1-2 hours out of cage per day. I'd leave them out more when I'm just home but they're behavior goes down hill as a factor of time so it doesn't work out well that way. In the beginning they'll focus on me, training, themselves, playing, etc. After a bunch of time out they'll get bored and start fighting, destroying things, etc.

How much of that time is spent directly interacting with your parrot? 40-90% Usually we're spending time directly together when they are out. Sometimes they're mellow and I can just leave them out and do my own things but usually they cause too much trouble. So either I'm paying attention to them or they're not out.

How often do you train your parrot and how long for? Daily for 10-40 minutes.

How long does your parrot get left completely alone for? (when you go shopping/work etc) 8 hours

Do your parrots have/had any behavioural issues? I would like to say their entire existence is a behavioral enigma but in the context that I think you're asking, no.

Did you get your parrot with the issue or did it develop after?
Did you manage to improve or cure the behaviour issue? There have been some biting, fleeing, and other small issues that were caught early on and solved with training.

Do your birds ever go outside? Yes
If no why not? Middle of winter or bad weather
If yes how long for and how often? Whenever the weather is nice. Usually 3-5 days per week.
How do you take your birds outside? eg clipped wings/harness/carrier. Harness, aviary, carrier

Just curious I seem to come under critism alot (not on here)and wondered how the life my birds have compare to other peoples. I'll answer in a seperate post.
I'm sure it's all for the best. It's a way of learning. I just don't like when people get carried away and become competitive for most spoiled parrot award. What should be a good size becomes minimum and people who don't meet a certain threshold are vilified. Things like fewer toys than someone else turns into "parrot abuse" etc. Fact of the matter is, more is nice but real limits exist. We are limited by space and finances. Also, from a behavioral standpoint it's not good to spoil the parrot too much because that hurts their relationship to us and makes them less of a companion pet and more of a burden. Still, there are genuine minimums that must be met and we should do our best to do better.

Note, I'm just sharing my situation for those curious and for comparison but am not making any kind of recommendation, minimums, or other kinds of suggestions that others should take from this. When I put together a thought through article, it is generally intended for others to try on their own. Some of the things I mentioned are suitable to my circumstance but possibly not to others. I know people look to me for advice but this isn't meant as a suggestion or standard for others to follow in any way. Thus without further explanation/analysis, it should not serve as any standard or recommendation for others to use

How does your parrots cages compare to the size reccommended for you species? Minimum, undersized, larger than reccommended?
Minimun cage size recommend for a Caique is 24X24, my BHC has a 32"x23"x63" cage, so larger than recommended.
If undersized what are your reasons for that?
None, but if I did have a smaller one it would be for space or price reasons. But always go by the rule "bigger is better."
If larger than reccommended roughly how much larger?
I knew my Caique would really appreciate the more space, especially since they have a really high energy level. I also bought a dometop for her to climb upside down since they love to climb/hang upside down as well as the fact that domwtops have a little more room than playtops.

How many toys do your parrots have in total?
15
How often do you change them round?
None yet, but I do rearrange them to try to pique her interest.
How many do you keep in the cage at one time?
All
How often do you buy new toys?
Usually one or two a week.
What about perches?
She has 7 in her cage.
What type are they? How many do you have in the cage?
All are in her cage and she has 2 rope perches, a rope boing, a rope/wood ladder, a cement perch, a plain ordinary dowel, and a wooden one which I can't seem to remember the name of.
How often do you swap them round?
I haven't yet.
How much time does your parrot spend out of his cage minimum and maximum time on average?
Minimum:2-3 hours
Maximum:6+ hours

How much of that time is spent directly interacting with your parrot?
4+ hours
How often do you train your parrot and how long for?
Usually once or twice a day or anywhere to 10-30+ minutes.
How long does your parrot get left completely alone for? (when you go shopping/work etc)
Depends, on work days: 7 hours or less. On my days off, maybe an hour or so.

Do your parrots have/had any behavioural issues?
Not really, she has a jekyll/hyde personality where one minute she's in total bliss happily surfing, then totally peeved because who knows what set her off, but Caiques are kinda know for that.
Did you get your parrot with the issue or did it develop after?
She had it before I purchased her.
Did you manage to improve or cure the behaviour issue?
I don't really think I can "improve" this behavior but I can try to learn to read her better.

Do your birds ever go outside?
Not yet.
If no why not?
She is clipped but obviously it is not safe to take a clipped parrot outside unharnessed. I don't have a harness for her yet or a suitable carrier to take her out.
If yes how long for and how often?
N/A
How do you take your birds outside? eg clipped wings/harness/carrier?
I plan on taking her outside quite often once I purchase her a harness and properly train her how to wear it.

How does your parrots cages compare to the size reccommended for you species? Minimum, undersized, larger than reccommended?
I'd definetly say undersized---she has the largest King's Cages Aluminium Travel Carrier which is about 20 by 28 by 20.
If undersized what are your reasons for that?
Jacko and I went through a rough period where we were living pretty cramped and gypsy-like (I can honestly admit that sometimes we're broke---but I do my best living off 700 a month). I needed a smaller, secure, safe cage and these are, IMO the easiest and nicest cages on the market. I'll be ordering the large aluminium 33 x 23 dome top King's Cages cage when all her vet bills are said n done and I can start saving. As well, right now I'm trying to make her feel more secure and getting her plucking under control, I've noticed its worse in a large cage---she seems overwhelmed. Plus, I've been burned pretty bad with the generic bargain powder coat cages and said I'd rather start small and quality---then risk Jacko and I being injured *again*.

How many toys do your parrots have in total?
13 or so plus a few foot toys
How often do you change them round?
Every 3 days
How many do you keep in the cage at one time?
3 plus foot toys and foraging
How often do you buy new toys?
I buy a few each month

What about perches?
I buy them as needed
What type are they? How many do you have in the cage?
-Natural wood and a larger concrete perch (throwing this out), will be getting rope---I have two as her cage doesn't allow for more comfortably
How often do you swap them round?
As needed

How much time does your parrot spend out of his cage minimum and maximum time on average?
Minimum she's out 3-4 hours, max is literally all day
How much of that time is spent directly interacting with your parrot?
Varies on how we're both feeling---she's more of a hang out than in your face bird
How often do you train your parrot and how long for?
Again, depends on how we're doing---some days we just get this mutual 'dude, I'm tired ok?' and we spend the whole day snoozing, other days easily an hour
How long does your parrot get left completely alone for? (when you go shopping/work etc)
-Rarely, maybe 3-5 hours at a stretch at worst---unless there's an emergency

Do your parrots have/had any behavioural issues?
-She feather plucks and is afraid of hands so can be defensive, she was terrified of anything new and had no confidence/coordination
Did you get your parrot with the issue or did it develop after?
-She came to me this way
Did you manage to improve or cure the behaviour issue?
-She no longer is terrified of new things/toys/food, and is a curious soul who's come leaps and bounds in finding her wings and independence again. As far as her feathers and fear we take it one day at a time, some days she's good, some days she's not doing so well. As someone suffering PTSD I understand her and accept it, it will take many years to heal fully from her traumas and fears and we'll get there when she's ready to get there. One step at a time.

Do your birds ever go outside? YES :D
If yes how long for and how often? Pretty much whenever the weather is good and when she's in the mood---how long depends on where---it can be a daily errands run, a roadtrip to visit my mother, etc(Jacko *loves* more than anything sitting in the car in the parking lot at the local Wendy's while we eat our pre-trip meal---occaisionally she gets a french fry lol).
How do you take your birds outside? eg clipped wings/harness/carrier
We're slowly working on the harness, she climbs into her pak-o-bird really well.
:gray: ---Jacko (13 year old TAG rescue and my little turkey-bird girl :) )

Completely agree, just amazes me how often I come under fire for doing this that and the other wrong by people that know nothing about me or my birds. Usually its the people that keep an african grey in something I wouldn't house a budgie in too. I actually hate all the my bird has this that and the other, but I equally hate being told I'm not doing enough for my birds when I know full well that with lifes restrictions I couldn't do much else better for them.

If larger than reccommended roughly how much larger?

Barely minimum, due to average apartment size in Hong Kong is extremely limited.

How many toys do your parrots have in total? A few hundred pieces of parts and accessaries
How often do you change them round? Every few days, when Spencer lost interests
How many do you keep in the cage at one time? 2 - 3
How often do you buy new toys? Whenever parts run out. Not happened yet, since I only have Spencer for 3 months

What about perches?
What type are they? How many do you have in the cage? Concrete one
How often do you swap them round? Never, I just rotate it

How much time does your parrot spend out of his cage minimum and maximum time on average? 1 -3 hours. Minimum 0 hour, maximum 4 - 5 hours on holiday
How much of that time is spent directly interacting with your parrot? 30-60 mins
How often do you train your parrot and how long for? 15-30 mins
How long does your parrot get left completely alone for? (when you go shopping/work etc) 8-10 hours a day on average

Do your parrots have/had any behavioural issues? No
Did you get your parrot with the issue or did it develop after?
Did you manage to improve or cure the behaviour issue?

Do your birds ever go outside? Every week if weather permits
If no why not?
If yes how long for and how often?
How do you take your birds outside? eg clipped wings/harness/carrier Harness, he is full flight
