Mine prefer sunflower seeds and red apple. He loves grapes too but you cant cut that into small chunks easily unfortunately and I would feel so cruel offering him a grape to bite then snatching it away! Lol.

Vegetables, fruit, and nuts, in that order. Vegetables can be fed more than fruit or nuts because fruit has a lot of sugar and nuts have a lot of fat.

I have a GCC and his favorite treat is probably walnuts. He also loves peanut butter, millet, sweet potato, carrot, broccoli, spinach, corn, papaya, bananas, strawberries, grapes, pear, apple, pomegranate, pasta, and wheat berries.

NEVER feed chocolate, caffeine, avocado, eggplant, or mushrooms.

Whatever you feed, keep in mind that your bird is tiny so you want to give it tiny portions of fruit and nuts due to sugar and fat content. You don't have to worry as much about vegetables.

If your bird is young or unaccustomed to "table food" he might not want it at first. Just keep offering it and eventually he will be interested. It helps to eat the food in front of him to show him how good it is, but never give a bird food that you have taken a bite out of because human saliva is dangerous for a bird to ingest.

Here is a list of bird-safe foods: Safe & Toxic Foods.

Thanks, I've been feeding him sunflower seeds and red apple as treats. Should I try some vegetables, ? :gcc:

Definitely! Try all the foods I listed and any other fruits, vegetables, or nuts you can think of (as long as you know they are safe to feed).

It's very likely that your bird will not touch it at first. Just keep offering it and eventually he'll try it. If he doesn't seem to like it after he tries it, keep feeding it for a week or so and see if he changes his mind.

With the veges, things like brocolli & spinach, do you give it to the bird raw or cooked?

I realise that in the wild, birds will never eat cooked food... but then again, they probably won't come across brocolli either!...

Does it matter either way?

My GCC is about 4 months old, & won't touch brocolli. Tried celery for 2 weeks, but now just ignores it. Even with carrots, it took a few tries before she started taking tiny nibbles

My GCC LOVES bananas, grapes, apples and sunflower seeds (and regular finch seed - she gets this sometimes when I have her on my shoulder and am feeding the finches...she's a little thief). However, she mostly seems to chew up the grapes and apples until she gets all the juice out, then flings the leftovers across the room. So that gets pretty messy.

If you serve it raw it has more vitamins because when you cook it the vitamins leach out into the water.

It's possible that your GCC just doesn't like broccoli, but it doesn't hurt to keep offering it. You might try just breaking off the little sprigs on top of it and offering it that way.

My GCC likes carrots but he will only eat them if I give them to him as "shavings" so I just a carrot peeler to shave off thin strips and he will eat those. :-)
