Help with new baby Meyers

Postby Katz » Fri Apr 06, 2012 10:40 am

Hello All! i posted in the introductions and am now hoping to get some answers on here. I am going to receive my baby girl Meyers in mid-may, and I wanted to know how I should prepare for the baby's arrival. What should I do with the baby when it gets home? Should I cook it a meal or just feed it the pellets it was weaned onto and slowly get it used to Harrison's and fresh cooked food?

How soon should I start handling and training?

How much attention should I pay it when it arrives and on its first few days?

I got it a big cage, toys, accessories, UV lamp, and everything...

Any other tips? I have owned birds but never brough home a baby parrot. I am quite nervous about messing up.

Thank you all very much!

I also got my baby cockatiel last year in mid may lol.

I think for the first few weeks, continue feeding the pellets that it was weaned on to, this is good to do because these pellets are something familiar to your meyers, so it wont be wary about eating them.

I started handling my bird the day after he arrived, but he is a hand raised bird, so he is used to handling. If your bird is hand raised then just open the door to the cage the next day as long as it doesn't seem scared, if it isn't hand raised, then wait as long as it takes for the bird to come out, but do open the door on the next day and leave it open a while to see of your bird wants to come out or not. Give it a lot of attention in the first few days, wether it is out of the cage or not, sit by its cage, talk to it, whistle to it and make it feel like you are communicating with it.

I think I would start training as soon as your bird feels at home and is bonded to you.

The most important thing is to not be nervous. Your Meyers will be able to sense your nervousness when you are handling it and will also be nervous then. Make sure you are confident.

If you need any help, feel free to pm me, I'm here to help

Warmest regards and good luck with your baby Meyers,

Aww thanks a lot for the kind words and the advice, I will definitely keep that in mind and will message you if anything, I really appreciate it!

And I will do as you say. The first day I will let baby rest and acclimate, and the next I will open the cage and see what she wants to do. She was handraised also, so it should be considerably easier, I hope. But she will not come to me clipped not do I plan to clip her, which is why I want to get a handle on her as quickly as possible.

I have so much nervous excitement in me now. A bunch of the stuff I ordered for her came in yesterday, and I cleaned the cage and put some perches in already. I can't wait!

Thanks again,
Katz

No problem, that's why I'm here. It's good that your Meyers is hand raised, it will make it easier to handle her and play with her and she will probably be more confident.

The day after I got my cockatiel, I opened his cage door to change his food and water and he jumped onto my hand and put his head down to ask me to pet him  I wasn't expecting this, but it was good to see that he was very confident and fearless. Most hand raised birds are confident to go on your hand straight away, because they are brought up by humans.

It's good that you have already bought her loads of toys and perches, your Meyers is sure to love them!

Anyway, good luck with your meyers parrot!
