New baby Meyers and Dove

Postby Katz » Tue Apr 10, 2012 3:09 pm

I got a lot of great information on my new baby Meyers from all you lovely people and I just wanted to know one more thing:

What do I do when the baby Meyers comes in regards to my dove? Can I house them in the same room? I have had my dove for about 8 months, and hand raised her. She is very healthy, so I was wondering if it was safe? Can the dove fly about and lets say- land on the baby's play stand? any input would really be appreciated!

Thanks a lot,
Katz

Assuming both birds are disease free I should think the only risks of them being in the same room is the parrot inflicting an injury on the dove. You will need to supervise time out of the cage together carefully and watch out they dont nip each others toes if out of the cage seperately.

You're going to have to just wait and see how it goes. Definitely quarantine them for at least 30 days. But after that it will all be a behavioral matter. Obviously don't cage them together or leave them unsupervised together. Over time you'll either discover that they get along, ignore/avoid each other, or can't be anywhere near each other.

After you have quarantined the Meyers, put the Meyers cage next to the doves cage (about a few cm apart) and see what kind of behaviour they are showing towards eachother. If they are talking/vocalising with eachother, and they are not showing any aggressive behaviour to eachother, they can be allowed out of the cage with eachother but with supervision.

Sorry I was away from home and not able to answer your replies...Thank you for the advice, guys! I will definitely quarantine in separate rooms, then, and then slowly try to get them used to each other. The only thing I am worried about is that the dove is in full breeding season mode and is getting a bit aggressive right now... but we will see. Maybe I will start introductions after it stops being hormonal.

Thanks!

I really can't! I am going crazy waiting for the big day. She is in Ohio and I am in New York. So me and my boyfriend will take two days to get her. We will spend the day in Ohio in the parks and spend the night on a campground and pick her up in the morning.

I am now setting up the cage and getting the area ready. I just can't wait to be able to cuddle her! Hopefully she gets handleable real fast!
