Is my new bird molting??

Postby RJGIII » Sat Apr 14, 2012 3:56 pm

Hey everyone,
New to the forum and also a new daddy to a 6-7 month old Senegal named Octavia. Ive had her for about 5 days now and she's been great thus far. The reason I picked her over the other two birds was because she was much less hand shy than the other two although she wasn't the prettiest one. I noticed her feathers weren't as perfect as the others but I was assured she was simply losing her baby feathers. She eats well, veggies, fruits, and pellets but I've notices a few feathers on the floor of the cage (whole not broken or chewed i don't think). She also preens quite frequently and has those white things on some feathers on the top of her head. Ive tried to scratch her head to help her out but she's not entirely comfortable (not at all) with me touching her head yet. Also there are even some green tinted feathers on her what I think should be entirely grey head. And lastly the feathers that would be closest to or around the eyes are not full either. Is my bird molting or does it sound like she might be plucking or ill??

Thanks,

Rob

If the feathers look that they came from a porcupine, those are pin feathers. Usually that means molting time. If you see bald spots around the body where feathers should be, you may have an issue.
