Caique Help?

Postby Pomlover2586 » Sat Apr 14, 2012 6:04 pm

So my darling Iago has been acting a bit weird lately....or maybe normal since we ares till getting to know him?

At first when we brought him home he was fairly quiet and standoffish. He didn't want my husband or myself picking him up, but when we would forcefully pick him up he would be just fine.

A week later he was coming out of his shell, stepping up willingly (most of the time) but generally only for me- still plays catch me if you can with husband.

He also whistles and chirps for us, but for me in particular. He also makes a clucking sound and then bobs his head repeatedly when I am around. He regurgitated once, but has not done it since, but he still bobs his head a lot with me.

The last two days he has gone back to not wanting to be held much and plays catch me if you can to pick him up.

His cage door is open most of the day, and while he will climb around on top of it, he generally stays inside of his cage sleeping eating etc.

We have a playstand for him and when we set him on that he will stay for 15 mins or so, and then jumps/glides back to his cage.........

His behavior has me confused......I have not formally started his clicker training since he is still new to our home- will be 2 weeks next wednseday.

** Edited to Add:

Today Iago has been screaming much more than usual. I am ignoring the behavior (his cage is open) and when he does quiet down i talk to him, pet him etc.....but he has just been on a roll today with high pitched screaming. He hasn't done this before. He will usually scream 1-5 times per day loudly and the rest are whistles and chirps.....today it's been practically non stop....

Any ideas or thoughts?

Most birds that aren't terrified of you can probably begin training the same day they're brought home. Training is much more than developing behaviors. It develops communication between you and the bird. It helps build their trust for you, and helps them bond with you.

Yes, I'll be picking up a clicker this afternoon to begin training with. He's cute, but he definitely has a stubborn streak :)
