Rose breasted cockatoo and African Grey

Postby Salmando9 » Wed Apr 18, 2012 11:25 pm

I have a female African Grey and I'm getting a male Rose breasted cockatoo. Do you guys think it's a good idea to have these two kinds of parrots together? I'm worried about my grey getting mad, jealous and starts plucking? The grey is only 11 weeks old.
What do you guys think?

Thank you!

Cockatoos are REALLY hard to take care of. You need to go to MyToos.com and read up on their behaviour there before you even consider taking on any type of cockatoo. They're prone to plucking, biting, and screaming, and they are incredibly demanding birds socially. From what I've read, cockatoos are even harder to keep happy than greys.

Make sure you do TONS of research before you consider adding a cockatoo to your flock.

great suggestion saerphe, everyone should go there before considering a too.yes they are very demanding, loud, you have to cook their food, they must be flighted, and have a very nasty bite they have 2 sharp points like fangs on the bottom of their beak and it hurts.they are also dusty and have to constantly vacuum or it can make you sick.but i do love mine and wouldn't give her up for anything. :corella:

You can see our situation in today's introductions. The grey may chase the 'too away from food, but that's their only real conflict. They preen each other quite often, and sit together sometimes. I won't say they're inseparable after a year, but they seem to be growing closer.

Our galah is not loud, nothing like the ubrella we had for a couple of months. We have to cage her for a time-out occasionally when she gets real persistent with chewing. I never wanted her in the first place, and wife gets exasperated with her destruction, but has made a lifetime commitment to her. She's one and a half years old, and doesn't talk at all.

Others don't believe in clipping wings; we don't believe in cages, except for sleeping and time-out (different cages).

We're retar'd, so around the birds most of the time. If you are working class, the companion might be a good idea. We saw a CAG at the bird store that was given all the toys, but alone all day, and his front was plucked clean.

Grey owners seem to be attracted to galahs; guess it's the color.

what do you give time outs for?mine are flighted and only use cages for sleeping and eating.they are both happy and never need time outs.cage doors open at 7-730 am and close at 8pm.it is sad more people are not against crippling birds that are meant to fly.

Time out is for repeatedly going back to the same item to chew and destroy.

Having a pet bird is full of compromises. There are downsides to clipping vs. locking in cage or home vs a harness for fresh air. We've read that parrots who never go outside lose their color vision. You choose your compromises, knowing there is more than one answer.

We have lost 3 flighted cockatiels in the last 5 years. :greycockatiel:

i have had flighted birds for 18 years not lost one.and they do go outside in outdoor cages or harness.my neighbors dog ran out in the street and got hit and killed by a car but the solution is not taping my dogs legs together to prevent that from happining to mine.

I have a bird room for my fully flighted guys, and there is a cage inside that room. I put them in their room if I'm ventilating or cleaning the main living space, or if I just want some quiet time. The nice thing about having a bird room is that they can still fly around in it and hang out on playstands in unobstructed view, instead of being inside a cage. My guys go in their flight cage only at night to sleep.
