CAG or Electus???

Postby Lesa1211 » Mon Apr 23, 2012 6:36 pm

Hello, Ive been doing some research. I want to eventually add another parrot to my home. Right now I have a G2(Kia). She's still young (8mo) Im not running out and getting another parrot. I want to make sure I get a suitable one for our home. I was thinking a CAG or an Electus but I would really LOVE an Electus. I think they are beautiful birds. And from what Ive read they are really affectionate. Is it possible for a G2 and an Electus to become playmates if I get a baby Electus and they grow up together? Also Ive read that the Electus likes a quiet enviroment. I have an autistic 6yr old son tat does get a little loud every so often. Would loud noises scare an Electus? Or if I got a baby would they just get used to it. Kia has no problem with it. Maybe because i got her so young she's just used to it. Any advice here would help. I want to make the right decision. Thanks.

Well, I'm not sure about eclectus, but I know that Grey's can get pretty jealous around other birds.

Ekkies are great birds. If you get them used to different things, nothing will scare them, and when and if they are scaree, it doesn't take them long to adjust. That is of course if you get one who's been raised properly at the breeders.

It is said that Ekkies are better off in quiet environments, and probably true, but let's not not get too carried away with that statement. I love music and I play it really loud in my house sometimes. Jazz is used to it and doesn't mind. Of course I don't play it for hours on end. The rest of the time, my household is normal, with two teenagers sometimes fighting and 2 dogs barking. Jazz is just fine with all that.

Ekkies will go to anyone that has a bit of "bird manners". They don't have an absolute favorite person and will enjou the company of everyone in the family, even friends.

Their big drawback ? Very, very loud screaming. They don't scream all day, but they do scream occasionnally, and Oh my God, it is ear piercing ! Also their specific nutritional needs. Very easy to manage, but it takes a bit more dedication. Tou just don't feed them commercial foods.

But, I don't see why an Ekkie would not be a good idea with your son, if you accept their negative sides. The males are such little suckers. Tou have to make sure to teach them independence, or else you will have a problem with a velcro bird. That is the best advice I can give you.
