One of my conures flew away today

I was taking my birds to thevetthismorning and once we got there I proceeded to pull a stupid and open the carrier a crack to get at the paper towel on the bottom. Kahlo squeezed passed my hand and got away. She flew toward s the bird sanctuary on the vet's property and disappeared. We searched for her for a long while both before and after our vet visit. They must have about 500 birds at that place.

I'm feeling really bad about it. I don't know what I thought was going to happen when I opened that carrier. Sooooo stupid and I've learned my lesson 100 times over. This is the same bird that got away from me last month but we found her on a tree. This time, however, I think we may actually never see her again. :'(

thank you for the links. I have been posting lost bird ads all over the place on the internet. Tomorrow when I drive back up there to pick up the meds for my sun conure, i'm going to drop by the animal control which is just down the street and make a lost pet report with the.

*IF* Kahlo stays in the area of the bird sanctuary, the workers will find her. They are already aware of that some dumb client openned her bird carrier in the parking lot. WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?!?!?!

I haven't gone to those two sites, tho, so thank you. If anyone else knows of any lost & found sites, please let me know. I've been thinking of going to all the conure forums and posting there as well.
She's so tame (but nippy) I think someone will find her unless she falls prey to a hawk first.

No problems, get some posters done- litterally as many as you can afford and put them everywhere your allowed to, get friends and family to carry them about with them and get them to do the same, no matter how far away they go. See if any of your local radio stations will put an alert out. Your dusky stands a better chance of escaping predators than say your sun because of his colours, he won't stand out so much. Do not give up hope and please please keep us updated.

I'm guessing your a busy person and was in a rush or on some sort of autopilot, so you did it without registering what you were doing until it was too late. World of difference between that and someone who is just careless cuz they don't think of the consequences, the brain behaves strangely when under stress.

I just wasn't thinking at all, to tell you the truth. I was in excrutiating pain at the time and almost had to go to the 24/7 emergency clinic over it but I decided to keep the appointment anyway. My mind was not working, let me tell you. I was only concerned with the paper towels on the bottom of the carrier (stupid, stupid, stupid).

I like my birds to be fully flighted but there are certain precautions you have to take and I just wasn't thinking clearly. I didn't think that I was OUTDOORS and that either one of them could fly away. I'll use this as a lesson because if I were to lose my CAG Zuzu like this, I would be devastated.

She was seen yesterday and this morning by the vet and her workers. They tried to get her to come down from the trees but she either didn't know how or was too afraid. I think it was more likely that she didn't know how. That animal is not afraid of people.

The vet took me waaay back into her property to see if she was still there on the same tree. She would have come down to me if she had seen me. But she wasn't in that area anymore. i couldn't hear her or see her. And she's a loud mouth.

So my hopes are up that they'll be able to get her. They live out in country area but this also means that the trees are several hundred feet high. We distributed flyers around the neighborhood and then left. We live 1 hour south from there.

The two dangers in the area are hawks, and an electric fence nearby. But I'm staying positive. Trying to anyway.....

Good luck, I really hope you get her back.

One time I had Kili in the car and she crapped on my hand and I had a stupid moment where I opened the window to drop it out of my hand. Then with the window wide open and the parrot on my other hand I had a panic moment realizing what I had just done and immediately shut it. It's not like she was trying to get away but if something happened that would have been really bad. It happens to everyone, just gotta do our absolute best to have good practices and triple check everything. Let us know how the recovery goes.

One thing that has me thinking negatively is that when I went to the alleged tree of a kahlo sighting, there were hawks on that tree calling out to eachother. She's almost completely green so she has natural camoflage but I think if they don't see her or get her by the end of this coming week, then our chances of getting her back at all will be close to non-existent. We have a lot of hawks here and I think that is the biggest danger for her. As loud and clumsy a flyer as she is, she could not outfly a hawk.

But, I'm trying to stay positive. The vet offered to clip Zuzu's and Sunny's wings yesterday at the vet visit (after Kahlo flew away) but I refused. It doesn't change my mind about keeping them flighted. But it does teach me that birds are birds no matter how tame and they *will* fly away if given the chance and especially if they're not trained to fly well and come when called. I will be teaching Zuzu to do both.

Don't give up, you never know. I've heard of people being reunited with their birds after long periods of time when other people have found them. Also read a story about a grey that escaped who wasn't a good flier as he had only recently grown his wings. 6 months on there are still sightings of him but nobody has been able to get near enough to catch him yet. I don't want to give you false hope but I do believe there is hope. Just keep on getting out there taking leaflets, posters round everywhere you can, contacting as many vets, rescues and police stations etc as you can, talk to everyone you see and spread the word to as many as you can.
