HELP! FOUND PEACOCK IN BACKYARD

Postby katydid28 » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:29 pm

uhhmmm. not sure where else to go. today walked out to find female peacock in backyard. called animal control. no one reported it missing. no band, no identification. his suggestion was to just leave it be.. said that sometimes they are wild...we live in ohio. should i just leave it? should I try and catch it it's pretty big. has just been hanging out in yard comes close so is tame. feeding it bella's sunflower seeds. we live in a suburb that used to be country for example 2blocks down people keep chickens but have never seen peacock. Help !!! what should i do. hate to leave it out if its someones pet. will it return home? anyone have any experience been in yard for 1/2 hr. now.
thanks!!!

If you feed it, it will probably hang around.

I have no experience with peacocks whatsoever, hopefully someone else will reply!

Well, had to run to the store, Left some food and water for it and when I returned peacock was gone. Called the bird rescue and zoo by us and their consensus was to just leave it. The zoo had said that a while ago they were getting calls about a peacock in the area that would just roam around. If this was the same bird has survived quite a while. Of course could not take it. The bird rescue thought that it was probably owned at one time that wondered away, said this is the mating season and may have been looking for a mate. Stated that people that own peacocks let them roam free and use them as alarm systems since they will give a loud call when someone comes near. She said they could travel 10 miles away from roost. Could not take it and Advised no need to capture it just offer food and see if it stays, as well as post flyers. I left phone number with all areas. It was quite a surprise to find one in my yard! and am kinda sad to see it leave, hope it is ok... but just as well, Bella my parrot was a little freaked out by it as she watching it out the window. Thanks for listening, I was really freaked out when I first found it and just wondered if there was someone out there with advice, I didnt want to see it get hurt. After I calmed down and came to my senses I started calling places. It's not every day that you find a peacock in your yard! Thanks Again!!!!! On a side note.. Bella my red belly will be 6 mos. on june 10. she is my first parrot and I am totally smitten. She is wonderful! Has learned wave and turn around with clicker training. We are working on recall now. Surprisingly she flys short distances quite well ,as we are waiting for her clipped wings to molt since the breeder would not leave her unclipped. She was saying a few words but then stopped when she became fascinated with whistling, so we stopped responding with whistles leaving just her contact call and I think she may start again. She spends most of her day on the play area we have by our windows and is such a character, she always makes us laugh. Will try to post some pictures later and one of our surprise visitor as well.

Katy, the peacock might comeback. If it does - feed it and give it water. They can travel long distances and also find their way home. Could be something happened at home and the food ran out. Watch for coming and going. Feed and water while it is there. If it doesn't leave you have a peacock.

The birds who fly south for the winter go because they are bug or nector eaters. Birds that live on seed will survive the winter if there is enough food.

Thanks for the advice,
Yes, I thought about transferring a disease to Bella, so I was sure to wash my hands afterward.( She would not take the seeds from my hand but would nip at my fingers like a duck then eat the seeds when I put them on the ground.) We have a wooded backyard and this has been a concern esp. when I take her out in her cage because we have birds all over the yard. but I think it's one of those things that I kinda have to put the best practices into place being careful then have faith. I don't know what else to do short of putting her in bubble. Does anyone else have these concerns when taking their birds out? I left some food and water out for the peacock, I'm not sure I WANT a peacock, but I would feel awful if I didnt feed it if it did. I don't think it will return the chipmunks or racoons are more likely to eat the food. But then again...I never thought I'd have a peacock in my back yard! I have to say it was pretty cool. I tried downloading picture but could not figure out how to transfer from my phone to computer...arrgggh I hate technology sometimes.
