Hi all, Coco has finaly arrived!!!

She stepped up on my finger from her carrier. Then she had a confused fly around crashing into windows. That lasted about one to two minutes. She then hid behind the cat carrier and under the radiator because the carrier was close to it. Then I gently picked her up. She did not even try to bite me. Because her heart was beating really really fast I gave her a stroke on the back of her neck and put her in her cage. I could release her straight away when I put her close to the cage. She grabbed it with her beak and walked in herself. Then I got the bowls out and filled them with water and some food.
She did not back away from me and did not looked scared when I opened the cage door.
My daughter was purposely having a bath and realised that we have Coco at home when she got out.
Coco is curious and gentle parrot. GEORGEOUS by the way!!!!!
When I get close to the cage she is not making steps backwards so that is good.
The cage is on the top of the wardobe so Mia cannot put her fingers in.
It is quite amazing experience!!!
We have a new pet :senegal: Coco!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everybody,

right, so we have Coco at home.
We have to make sure that she is no afraid of us.

She is thaught to step up on a finger.

Michael in his guide talks about teaching parrots to accept treats from your hand prior to teaching it to step up.

What is my next step.

She knows how to step up. My husband is going to take Mia out tomorrow so that I can take Coco out of her cage in peace and quiet.

What should I do?

If she steps up on my finger and will leave me to take her out I want to teach her to accept treats from my hand. HOW? should I do this. If she starts to fly around what should I do? She is not agresive she is just frightened.
And although she is frtightened she is not agresive. I just wanted to point this out again.

I need to get her to trust me. Please give me some advice on this.

Anything please!

I did not buy a parrot to mess this up.

When I approach the cage she is opening her beak. although she did not react to me giving her food and water. I think it is to tell me that she is frightened because she does not know me. But no major agresive behaviour. She is playing with her toys and I think she ate something already. But I cannot be sure as she is covered for her bedtime. It was just noises that she made that make me think that she ate something.

When I took her home from the car and after I let her watch us still in a carrier for a while, when I tried to take her out she was opening her beak. I backed away. After 10 seconds I decided to try to take her out anyway and she did not bite me.

I think she is pretty tame just frightened. Should I try to take her out tomorrow? I think I should just to show her that there is nothing to be frightened of.

Thanks a lot again!!!

congrats :D .i would just open the door and let her come out on her own.she shouldn't just wildly fly around it's never happened to me,parrots mostly like to hang out with their flock which is now you and your family. once in a while penny :gcc: will get a burst of energy and fly in circles screaming but it's rare and only lasts less than a minute.find a food that she loves and use that for her bedtime treat to get her in the cage for a little while.put off your training until you build your bond and she trusts you.

Thans a lot but Michal says that it is pointless just to open the cage door to let her go out on her own. He says that me teking her out will make her happy to see me and that she will be expecting a rewarding time out of her cage, basicaly that it will make cooperate with me. What do you think?
This will probably sound silly but when I became a mother so many people were giving me so much advice. I always listened to everybody and took only advice that worked for me. So I would like to do the same with our Coco.
Get as much information and expalanions as possible and see what works for Coco.
I believe that every parrot has its own personality and that I have to look at her as an individual and not as a general parrot.
It is really important to me for her to be happy, loving and all that.

I'll do whatever seems right.

I don't think it will hurt to let her come to you for a few days and build some trust even if ultimately you are wanting to only bring her out once she has stepped up first. You will probably find once she is used to coming out she will be more than happy to step up as soon as you open the cage after the first few times anyway. Just once you start asking her to step up before she comes out you need to perservere with it and do it every single time, if she won't step up for you then you'll need to close up the cage then try again so she learns no step up, no coming out.

i never reach in to the cages,i just open the door and let them come out and they are always happy to see me.no matter how you decide to get coco out she will always be happy to see you.it must be confusing to get so many different opinions so just take the ones that you feel good about don't worry your going to be a great parront.with my first i screwed up plenty it wasn't planned i inherited a damaged :amazon: and had no clue what i was doing but parrots let you know what they like and what they don't.i had no one to ask but i learned and wound up with a great companion til i lost him a year and a half ago.

Hi all,

so I did let her :senegal: go out of her cage on her own. She was sat in one place for hours yesterday watching us but it was a bit of a naightmare to get her back in her cage. She did step up for me whenever but immediately flew away from my finger. I ended up getting her in a towel and putting her back into her cage.
So to keep stress levels down I have decided that until she is comfortable to accept treats from my hand she will stay in cage. She is very curious and whenever I offer her a sunflower seed she doesn't know what to do with herself. Obviously she wants that seed very much so she keeps coming closer and then flies away staring at the seed.
She stopped flying around her cage when I put my hand into he cage to give or take the bowl wth food so I guess that is a good sign.
(her cage has not got them holes for bowls as it is not originaly for a bird but it was free lol)
We will see how it goes I think that it could take her couple of days to accept a treat from my hand. As I said we will see...

I would like to share this moment with you because only you can fully understand my excitement!

We've had major breakthrough! Coco started to accept treats from me just a minute ago!

She did try to take them couple of times before but she always snatched it of me. So even for that I rewarded her with bowl of food. But now she took two peanuts and a sunflower seed one after another carefully so she got her bowl as a reward again.

We are slowly making progress!!!

Can you suggest for how long should I do this before taking her out for the "first" time. I would like to avoid her being stressed out by having to towel her or chase her around to get her back in her cage.

Thank you very much!
