So after waiting a long time, and after a lot of difficulties, my baby girl Meyers, Gilly, is home with me! We were originally going to pick her up with my boyfriend, and took a road trip from New York City to Ohio, but our car broke down halfway there and plans were halted. She ended up having to be shipped but handled the experience beautifully...like a champ. I am very excited and very happy!
When I first had her, even in the crate, she was tweeting and whistling. She would step off the perch and playfully chew my fingers through the slats. I also gave her droplets of water with my syringe and handfed her pellets and she took them. At home, she started getting comfortable quickly and was quite vocal. I even put my hand in the cage and she went up to it and climbed on it and chewed my fingers.
However, some issues I have that I wanted to discuss are: she does not seem comfortable with how big the cage is. She seems to not know how to navigate, and is very sloppy moving around and falls a lot. She is also not eating or even going to the food/water bowls yet, as far as I could see. I coaxed her to the bowl by putting my face and fingers next to it and making kissing noises, but she just sat on it, facing the wrong direction, and then climbed back to her perch.
I also saw a behavior that is very strange to me. It looks like she was cranky when I woke her up in the morning, and didn't want anything to do with me. She let out this croaking/growling noise whenever I walked past the cage, or got close. She would also open her beak and slightly lunge forward in an aggressive fashion, I suppose. I will see how she behaves when I get home from work.
Any thoughts? How can I correct this aggression, and also, what can I do to get her to eat?
