What's wrong with my conure? weird behaviour

Postby Tali Foord » Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:07 pm

My sun conure is acting very strange. She attacks me every time I come near her cage and gets very upset at the mere sight of me. She is very calm with my husband and follows him everywhere. She was fine with both of us before and would fly away from us before. It attacks me violently if I even go near her cage. She shakes the cage and makes weird noises to come out to my husband. What could possibly be wrong? Please help.

Hormones possibly but I don't know when their breeding season is. How old is your sun she may be reaching maturity and beginning to favour your partner.
Have you changed anything about youself lately? haircut, perfume, nail polish for example or done anything different or accidently scared her?

if you can answer those then maybe someone can help you with your problem but without knowing the cause its harder to make suggestions on how to fix it.

I think she is around three at the most. She still has pin feathers on her head. I have not changed anything about myself. This change started a few days ago and got specially bad today. If it is a female would she naturally favour my husband and what things should I expect in her actions if she is reaching maturity?

is she showing off for your husband? when my :corella: started favoring my boyfriend she would do dances and special noises just for him. we fixed this by my boyfriend telling her no when she would come at me,i would just walk by and say hello when she was cuddled with him then i moved to give her a quick pet as i was walking by them now we can all sit together and she chose to stay with me a few days ago.

Yes she does show off for him and follows him around everywhere and almost nags him to take her out the cage. If I go near her cage she will bite me very aggressively and attack the cage. She has also been running her beak along the bars of the cage. Could it be that she is reaching maturity or is it pissible that something really scared her?

I think maturity is the most likely explanation. Get your partner to take her into a room she doesn't know and leave her. You can then go in and train her away from him, play games with her etc but start from the very beginning with taming exercises. Lots of rewards for when she's good.
She may never act how she used to with you but you can train her to tolerate you again.

Eventually you will be able to work with her in the room she lives in, without your partner there to start with. Then when he is there you be the one to get her out, feed her etc. Tell your partner what your doing and why your doing it. Tell him it's for his safety too cuz a jealous parrot can take it out on the favoured person.
