How often do you weigh your parrot?

Postby Michael » Sat Jan 16, 2010 10:53 pm

How often do you weigh your parrots? What methods do you use? What kind of equipment do you use? How do you analyze the weight fluctuations?

I weigh Kili in the morning after she takes her big poop to establish her empty weight and measure out her morning meal accordingly. In the evening I weigh her prior to training to have a ball park estimate of her level of motivation. Then after training I might weigh her one more time to determine how much evening meal to feed her.

I got a cheap digital kitchen scale, set it to grams, and built a simple perch to put on the scale. I did not permanently fix the perch to the scale so that I could take it off and weigh parrot food or other things (sometimes mail for postage). I just tare the scale with the perch on it to zero and put the bird on to weigh. For a while my bird weighing perch was broken so I would just put Kili on the flat bottom of the scale. It's a little easier with the perch though because the bird holds still that way and the scale gets a reading quicker.

I weigh them at least weekly, sometimes more.
I usually do it at the same time during the day though, to keep some sense of "control". I keep a nice spreadsheet with the date and exact time they were weighed.

I have a basic kitchen scale.

Tonight, i bought a digital food scale from bed, bath&beyond. I never really thought to weigh my bird and always left that to the vet. It makes sense to keep track of their weight (at least weekly), because we know that signs of illness can start with weightloss.

So here is Charlie, being weighed for the first time since I've gotten him.

Thanks.

I had a kitchen scale already, so I just set him down on it, he'll stay put long enough to get a decent reading.

I chose "a month" but the truth is more between a month and "at vet visits". If I think his weight might be changing, I stick him on the scale.

At the moment I way him daily. But I am switching to pellets so I want to make sure he eats enough.
Usually I way the birds every week or so.

I have almost teh same kitchen scale Michael does, and have it set to grams. Peewee just sits on the flat surface, but the perch idea is a very good one!
