About a lovebird wings clipping

Hello, everyone. I'm a south Korean and I enrolled on this forum for my lovebird. So although my English is poor, please understand it.

I read about wings clipping. Actually because I live in the apartment I thought I should do the wings clipping for my lovebird 'Kant'. I will grow Kant from tomorrow so I didn't do the wings clipping yet. Just because of windows, mirrors, lamps... etc... I thought I should do the wings clipping for the safety so I was learning about wings clipping for doing better.

But you guys don't think wings clipping is needed. I also don't wanna cut Kant's wings so still I'm worried about it. The lovebird isn't so smart like other big parrots. So I'm worried about that although I teach Kant about my apartment places Kant can be in danger. I'm worried about Kant can't understand windows, mirrors and lamps.

I wanna be Kant's good friend. Also I know Kant is a bird. But I should care Kant. So I wanna ask you. Kant is the small lovebird. Do you think although I don't do the wings clipping I can keep Kant safe? Do you think I shouldn't do the wings clipping? Do you think when I teach about my apartment during long time, Kant can understand it?

What is right? I don't know. If Kant had a problem because I didn't do wings clipping I would be so sad. But I don't wanna Kant feels gloomy from wings clipping. I heard big parrots are smarter so they can come back to their owner well. But when I don't do the wings clipping, Kant can't go out with me forever. Do you keep your parrots in only your home? Or without wings clipping can go out? But without wings clipping a lovebird can't go out.

What do you think about this? I wanna decide my mind. I love my Kant although I haven't met Kant yet.

lovebirds can be very smart too!with proper training you can teach them many things.living with flight parrot can be bit difficult and challenging but its more fun.you can read a lot of article here about Recall Flight & Flighted Tricks.just do some research and there is a lot of useful topics

i have 4 birds,3 are flight and 1 is clipped.my experience,flight birds are more friendly and less nervous.my CAG clipped since the day i got him and im waiting his feather to grow.like what i told you,with proper training flight birds are more fun.i dont need to worried if they cant come back to cage to get food/water.and when they decided to fly to me,its a big pleasure for me because i know they want to be with me.in other hand,my clipped CAG sometimes bite me when he nervous cuz he knows he cant fly.i also need to be his transport all the time because he is not independent.
many owners said clipped birds are easier to train,but my experience there is no different between them.of course the clipped one,they cant runaway from you but when they dont want to do something-the wont do it.and if you push them too far,they will bite which the flight one just will fly away. so you decided.

and for going outside,you need to harness train them.i dont know if there is lovebird's harness but im sure another parrot owner here will give you more information.

is your lovebird tame/hand feed?the hand feed one usually really tame,they already know step up very well.i dont think it would be so difficult for you to train them.good luck!

Yes you can keep kant safe without clipping the wings, provided of course you put the effort into doing so, but if you clip and don't put the effort in your bird has a higher probability of getting hurt. Actually regardless of if you parrot proof, a wing clipped bird has a higher injury rate anyway, so clipping does not necessarily keep them safe.

There are literally loads of things you can do, Try running a search for ''parrot proofing a room'' it will give you loads of ideas on how to make it safer.

I think when you first get your lovebird you need to keep all the windows and mirrors covered to start off with, let your bird get used to the room size and learn to sit on your hand.
Take him up to the windows/mirrors when you are ready for a few days running. Tap them with your finger and let your birds beak touch them so s/he knows there is an invisable barrier there.

One of my birds knows all about windows so when we have him out we don't shut the curtains. My other one, a cockatiel, does not know about windows and one day I forgot to shut the curtains, she flew into the window. She was ok thank god, but she stays away from the window now.

Actually I will bring Kant from my friend tomorrow morning. She has many birds and her 2 birds gave a birth to Kant 2 months ago. So already she clipped Kant's wings as her will. My question was this... I should do samething for Kant? I should clip Kant's wings like other people do? Would Kant can be much safer from it?

I decided I don't. Now Kant has clipped wings. My friend said Kant is so kind and nice to people. When Kant can fly, I won't cut Kant's wings. For it I will train Kant every moment. I will train to windows, mirrors... etc.

Of course I will train myself first.

I have had to put a clip on my daughters Lovie cage. Tweedle Dee was opening the door and coming out. Tweedle Dumb would not come out so Tweedle Dee stayed near the cage and made a lot of noise and danced. I let him have fun for a while but when I would go toward him he would run back in the cage so I could close the door.

These little parrots are as smart as any. They will learn what they can do. He may smack a window or mirror once but will learn fast. Don't clip unless you see that he does not learn but I am sure he will.
