Senegal wont bathe

Postby Tiggr » Mon Jul 02, 2012 1:35 pm

Hey everyone
im having trouble convincing my 6 month old senegal that its a good idea to bathe, i have had her almost a month now and in every other aspect she does ok, some teething problems with aggression and biting but we are working on that, anyhow, she really hates water, ive tried every type, shower, a bowl, out in the garden, the sink, the bath and a spray bottle, she just cowers from it, on the few occasions where ive tried to be persistant with the spray bottle she gets really grumpy and starts screaming , i dont really know what to try next and would appriciate any help or suggestions.
Much love and thanks

See if she will watch u having a bath or shower and make it look really fun. Don't force her until she is ready otherwise you risk making her phobic. If she takes treats use those as positive reinforcement when she starts getting braver.

I've also found that running the hoover for a while can encourage them to bathe. The only time harlie will bathe is after we have hoovered the living room lol. The others I've had don't have to hear the hoover first but will dip their heads in the water if they haven't already had a bath when we hoover.

Thank you for you reply, i will try the hoover thing with her, she does sit with me in the bathroom when i shower or bathe but she wont come near either, she just sits on the towel rail, she is target trained and i tried that to encourage her but no luck, ill keep at it, im bound to find something that works :) Till then BumbleBee will just have to be a scruffy lookin missy lmao

Senegals originate in a dry climate and don't like to bath much. Kili won't bath on her own more than once a week or two. I'd say just making water available so the bird could bath when it chooses to. Despite the fact that Truman (Cape Parrot) bathes almost daily, my Senegal Parrot is still cleaner any day of the week.

ok and thank you for your reply, i maybe worry too much but she is my first parrot, prior to her i had a kakariki, he was aviary reaered and i got him when he was one, not really a social bird but we did make progress with hand taming him before he died, so im working out things with her as i go, this forum is very helpful, Bumblebee is an awesome companion and makes me giggle 24/7 :) :senegal:

My senegal will only bath on his time, no spray bottle and no bird bath either. he will only bath in his water dish.. which only barely gets his head wet. he usually does it when i change his water and its nice and clean.

My Senegal bathes every two or three days; she has a water dish that she uses to also splash herself after I change her water. I've also showered with her AFTER she watched me shower and wanted to join in. :)

How big is your parrot's water dish?

Having your Senegal watch you bathe is good advice, too, as it worked for Tiki.

Hey there guys,
thank you all for your advice, i tried a few different things and non really worked for me but just when id given up hope, i discovered BumbleBea bathing in my dogs water bowl, so i went and got her one of her own which now sits on top of her cage and she now bathes every 2 - 3 days without fuss or upset, im very happy :)

Brilliant, thanks for the update.

Just be cautious to keep a good eye on her health for a while incase the dogs had drunk from the bowl before she bathed in it.
