Parrots and other pets in the home

Postby scully3915 » Thu Jul 19, 2012 6:23 am

i have a Maxi, hes pretty chilled, and i wondered how your parrots get on with any other animals you may have in your home.
I had two springer spaniels, sadly lost the second one this year, and i miss having a dog around very much. My life changed when my partner died 18months ago, and i work full time now, so taking on a dog is not an option. My dogs from pups grew up with birds , and i never had any trouble at all.
Im interested if anyone has had a cat that grew up with thier birds, and how things are.

I believe there are a few people with cats on here.

When I first started keeping birds I had a small zoo including 4 dogs, 3 chipmonks, a rabbit and 2 terrapins. The first few birds I had included a rosella, 3 tiels, a budgie and a peach fronted conure. That was around 13 years ago. The terrapins and 2 of the dogs stayed with my ex when I left him. Never had any problems but we never left them unsupervised and they had seperate rooms. I only have my two birds now due to living in a flat.

I'm not sure how i dare forget the aviary of finches, diamond doves and canaries :S

Rambo grew up with dogs and cats in his previouse home. When he came to me he just let everything else in the house know he was in charge. (He is a pedestrian)
Myrtle came to me knowing nothing of other animals and had never seen an Amazon either. She learned from Rambo that Amazons are in charge to the point of giving him airial support.

In my house hold in order of social control:
2 Amazons
5 Dogs in/out
5 Cats in/out
5 Cockatiels
2 Lovies

The dogs are okay with the Tiels and Lovies but I don't trust my daughter's 3 cats. My cats respect them as part of the family.

My indoor/outdoor tom cat (who is a barn cat and a ferocious hunter) does not bother my birds at all. I had a 16-year-old Quaker when the cat was a kitten and he learned at that time to leave the bird alone. My Quaker died at age 24 this year and the cat, now 8, has accepted 2 very lively and chattery GCCs and one amazon.

I'm not sure if my cat is an example of how all cats would act by any means, but my dogs also know that the birds of the house are not to be bothered and they leave them alone. Thankfully everyone gets along!

As long as the birds :monk: :meyers: don't eat the cats food or interfere with their comfy sleeping places, all is well!
