Scared the Cr*p out of me!!!!

Postby Pomlover2586 » Sun Jul 22, 2012 5:07 pm

Today is a warm day, so I have the door open with the screen door locked. For some random reason Iago lets out this high pitched squeak and then launches himself across and room and flies into the screen door! He is clipped, so by the time he reached the screen he was already close to landing, but he still smacked his beak into the screen. He's fine thank God- put him back in his cage and he went straight to eating. He's flown off his cage before- but never smack into the screen door. I was terrified he had broken his neck. What can I do to prevent this from happening again? My screen door had a metal divider/mesh look, so I know he can see it.....

Walk around the house holding him and let his beak touch windows, TVs, screens, mirrors etc. That way he will know whats there.

Other than that I would suggest letting his wings grow, so he can control his flight better ;)!

A third vote for letting his wings grow.

Other than that cml's advice is good. Some birds are a little slower than others to get the hint about windows etc though. When I get a new bird I'll do it a few days running just to make sure the message is home lol.

We keep his wings clipped for personal reasons. I understand pros and cons of doing this, but Iago has been clipped since he was a baby before we got him- he is well adjusted in his limed flight and has excellent control over a range of 6 feet.

We have walked him around and showed him the screen doors, windows etc, and he has never done this before. When he has launched himself before he always lands before he reaches the door. I think that's why it startled me so.

fourth vote for flight and showing boundries.i've kept flighted for going on 20 years never had one fly into a window.put a stand next to the screen door to give him a landing place to speak to the wild birds.mya :corella: flies from window to window to ask everyone "what are you doing?"and penny :gcc: has a daily screaching contest with the bluejay that visits daily.

Count me in as vote number 5 for keeping him flighted. If not then keep the door closed. He won't be able to smack into it then.

Well if you are dead set against letting him regain flight I would suggest you do what I posted, walk around the house with him. Do it everyday for a few days to make sure he knows everything, even if you think he already does.

No point in turning this into a flighted/clipped debate.

It's not a debate. It's a solution.
