Hi guys i got my Christian rapped in a towel to clip the end off his nails 2day he went mad so cant do that on your own so i see how he go if i find thay seem to borther him then off to the vets we go let them do it I all ways get worry at vets as thay had to give him some gas last time to calm him down but there is a risk he might not come out pete.

If they're leaving cuts they're too long (or too sharp--usually both happen at once).

Please don't use pedi-perches--they do more harm than good to the bottoms of the feet and do a shoddy job of keep nails blunted let alone trimmed to the appropriate length.

Your bird's nails should be trimmed to the point where the nail does not lift the ball of the toe off the ground---if every part of your bird's foot is not flat on the ground when he's standing on a flat surface the nails are too long.

You *can* learn to file the nail tips down with an emery board and can train the bird to accept this, but by and large I always say to bring the bird to the vet and have them do it.
The reason for this being is to avoid unpleasant stimulus with you--some birds are more trusting and can withstand you doing something less pleasant but some get really freaked out and do not like giving you their feet no matter how many treats you give.
DO NOT bring the bird do a store, always go with the vet who keeps disease transmission in mind and knows what they're doing.

Hi all I took my Christian to the vet monday 3 sep to have he nails clip and beak as that was getting long the vet was vary good not seen her b 4 she ask me lots of things like what he eats ext and cheak he breathing and i ask her why one nostril is biger then the other one she cheak it out and said keep look out make sure no discharge and said he is in good health and said dont use sand perchs any more give it 12wks see if he needs nails done again Christian and my self was stress out but all is well 2 day pete.

I got Nika's nails done two months ago and they're already long enough to stab my hands a lot. :/ I don't know where else to go except the nearby bird store but they cut them too short last time! The nearest avian vets are an hour away no matter what I do... but I don't particularly want to freak her out by doing it myself. Also she is eating healthy and her beak is look so much better than when I got her so I wonder why her nails are growing so much?

It can be a number of things, but there are methods to help your parrot work her nails down naturally. Use natural perches, ie real branches from the woods. The bark wears down their nails by itself. You could also get concrete perches, but if you do, ensure that they are smooth on the upside, so they dont harm your birds feet! I prefer natural wood myself, it works and its whats best for your parrot. Ive only had to cut our parrots nails once in a year!

Wowsers! That's neat. Well I am due to buy another perch or two. I've been spacing out my big purchases due to cost but it's time! Maybe I'll see if she's game for a little trimming and then make sure her perches are all good.

Dont buy perches if you can get fresh wood from someone's yard! Just make sure they dont use any pesticides or chemicals to treat their trees!

I'll have to be on the lookout for more wood and I need to get the necessary hardware. I've never seen a hanger bolt before but I'm sure they exist.

An hour, far? That's what I spend going to the store :/
Just went to the vet today and put aside 4 hours for the 30minute visit. But then Im fairly used having to do a bit of traveling to shop etc. Oh btw the reason I went to the vet wasn't for the nails though, spotted something in Gilas eye and took her in and she had gotten something small in the eye, looked pretty much as a grain of sand... But the vet eventually found what I spotted (she believed me though couse she could see something had scratched the eye a bit) so now it's out and Gila needs her eyes dropped twice a day for a while. Just happy the vet didn't just take a quick look telling me it had to be a reflection or something I saw.
