Bleeding :(

Postby Cockatielsongs » Thu Jul 26, 2012 2:54 am

Just want to share my experience.
Hi I'm 12 years old (my age may shock you I know) and I own a cockatiel. Today I came home with my older brother and I let my cockatiel out as usual. After a while I noticed his skin was bleeding, I was so shocked I began to panic, I forced myself to calm down and I grabbed a powder I had, holding him close and reassuring him the whole time I gently pressed the powder to where he was bleeding, after a slow proccess it eventually stopped. I gave him water (he was definately thirsty) and rewarded him for being so brave. It was one of my worse experiences and I definately hope it will never happen again.
The bleeding has stopped but there is still a mark, should I bring him to the vet? And I'm worried that if he preens that particular spot it would start bleeding again, will it? :greycockatiel:

I think definitely take him to the vet.
Remember you can also phone the vet and speak to the vet receptionist. Tell her/him what happened and what powder you used and see what they say. They might tell you that they cant give you any advice cos the vet has to see your birdy first but its worth a try to call first.
Also ask the receptionist how much a consultation with the vet is and how much you might be expected to pay, that way you know in advance.

If your birdy got scratched by a cat (dont know if you have a cat) then remember the bacteria under a cats claw can cause (alliteration alert) a bad infection and even if the scratch isnt bad the infection will be and your bird needs to go on anti-biotics.

also inspect your birdy's cage and toys, perhaps a sharp edge or piece of toy did that to your bird.

Good luck, let us know what happens :flapping:

He was bleeding at the bottom part of his stomach. I'm not sure how to describe how big the wound is but it's sort of round :( When it was bleeding it wasn't bleeding a lot however the wound is bigger than a normal pulled out blood feather is... it's hard to explain... :(

Hmm, I inspected his cage and I'm not sure but he has a natural perch and there is like a short thick branch sticking out pointing upwards, the tip of that short branch looks about the size of his wound so I took that out and any other sharp things in the cage. In fact I'm pretty sure it was that branch because I've seen him standing over it and the tip touches the exact place he was wounded... The thing is he has been using that perch for quite a while and has never gotten hurt before...

I would probably get him a vet check, it is hard to give advice without seeing him, especially as you don't know how it happened.
I don't want to tell you it will be fine and just keep an eye on it because I just don't know that. That said I'm pretty sure it will be fine but get an expert to confirm that.

One last thing, well done with how you dealt with it, I was very responsible at 12 but I'm not sure I would have handled it so well. You and your 'tiel are lucky to have one another, remember this as your life moves forward. :)

You can still use that branch, just file it down or get someone to cut the bit that sticks out off.

Thanks for all the advice :) I get him checked at the vets. Oh and when life does move forward, I'm taking my 'tiel with me ;)
