Anyone know why?

Postby Cockatielsongs » Sat Jul 28, 2012 1:08 am

Does anyone know why?
When my 'tiel lunges out to bite and I say "stop" he would put his down for a scratch. One moment he wants to bite and the next he is head butting me for a scratch...

Sounds like he's "mock charging". in other words he's pretending like he's going to bite to intimidate you, and then when you call his bluff he backs down and wants to be friends. Usually a sign of attempting to gain dominance, or simply playing games. Not sure how to "retrain" this behavior- but definitely continue to not back down because you don't want to reinforce it.

I don't retreat, he just luges out to bite my finger then he justs head butts my finger asking for a scratch. So I get confused wheather this is a bad thing. And when he does do it, should I scratch his head or not? :greycockatiel:

i do the same with mya :corella: before she bit she would do a little dance and charge so i put my hand up and she just cuddles her head in my hand it seams to calm her down.so i would say yes aslong as it doesn't include a bite it's fine.

That little kid (tiel) is pushing your buttons. That is why I call Myrtle a toddler. She tries to see what she can get away with. I cheat. Instead of telling her no she can't have something I just take it away. Just like with my kids - I choose my battles.
