need help with sleeping problem

Postby Guy.G. » Sun Jul 29, 2012 4:18 pm

Hi guy's.
Chief, my blue IRN always wants to sleep in the highest point in the cage (more severe than other parrots).
I tried a lot of different way's to convince him to sleep "normally" but nothing worked so far.
When he's out of his cage, on the tree perch I made for him, he doesn't care where he sleeps, but inside the cage he's looking for the highest point- even when that point is not comfortable and that leads to uncomfortable sleeping.
I can add the stick that came with the cage in a high point but then he will stay on him all day- I'm not looking for a quick fix, I want that he will understand that there's no reason to fear from sleeping in "low" points and hangout all over the cage just like he fill's free to do everything outside the cage.
CHIEF is highly well trained & trick trained, he's alone in cage and it's an A19 cage.

He's 6 months old and until now he had a little bit smaller cage, I introduced him to the new cage properly and transferred him to the A19 three days ago.
U can see some of his trick here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp_IXnMbFw4

I don't know if it is practical with your cage design for easy removal of perches but could you have a perch that only gets put in at night at a higher position?
I know if I was to try that with mine it would be a right faft putting it in each night and removing it the next morning.
I don't really know what else you could try tbh. Ollie used to cling to the side of the cage all night rather than sleep on his perches when I first got him, he will still do this if he doesn't have his happy hut in the cage.

That's what I did the first day and It worked .but, don't forget that parrot also nap and I don't know..it's a messy ritual so if there will be no other choice I'll make him a nice sleeping perch form one of the braches that I didn't used for the tree perch.
btw how can i upload pictures?

Can you be a bit more specific by what you mean? Is your bird sleeping high on a perch? I am having trouble understanding your concern with his sleeping position. If you could clarify it maybe it would be easier to help. :)

The problem is that he's looking for the highest spot in the cage, and this is where he'll sleep. It's a problem because those spots r not comfortable for sleeping, I need a way to show him that he can let go of his natural instinct and stop fearing from sleeping in lower places (he used to sleep on a big swing that he loves but now that swing is 3 inch's lower than an edge of a thick branch, guess where he sleeps :( and I can't move the swing)

Is him sleeping on a branch that much of a problem? it is how they would sleep in the wild.
I thought when you first posted that he was sitting on a toy or clinging to the bars in a corner or something.
Harlie went through a stage of hanging onto the very thin edge of her water dispenser with her front toes in the water, thankfully she sleeps on a perch now, I was worried she was going to end up with joint problems and even considered removing her water at night.

There is a post somewhere with a guide on adding images but I can't find it to tell you what size the images need to be. :?

From what I can see from the photos I think you may be worrying yourself a bit too much although obviously I'm only seeing a small selection of how he usually is though.

I would like to add a couple of suggestions though which may be of use to you.

You may wish to consider lowering the rope perch so he is not bending his head down so much when he is sat at the very top, I tend to use D links from other toys or they can be bought seperately for that. I know this isn't related to your question but I would also replace the clip used to fasten it as it is very easy for birds to get their toes and beaks trapped in that style. A few more toys may also encourage him to spend less time at the very top of the cage, you may need to remove a perch or two to achieve that as you do have alot of them from what I can see. You can rotate them every so often to add variation so they are not wasted.

Sure it does :), you just need to right-click the uploaded picture, and then put THAT adress between the above code in brackets.

This is the adress to one of your pictures, however you need to resize them, as they are far too wide for the forum.

About 500x500pixels should be about right, width being more important than height =).
