My 'too's breeder simply handed me the band and told me it wasn't worth putting it on him. I now wear it as a ring.

I don't really get it though, I've seen plenty of posts where leg bands are sent from the breeder to the Pet shop and now you got one with the too as a side dish, these must be open leg bands or? Here every bird listed as threatened have to have proper documents including paperwork ensuring it isn't offspring from wild birds etc and a leg band (not the open kind). And all breeders I know here (with the exception of one breeding budgies) use solid leg ands and put them on when the birds are way to small to leave their facilities. And I couldn't get the band off of Polarn unless I clipped it off, and it's pretty thick so would prolly be done at the vet if it was ever needed to be removed. Definitely not saying all birds here carry proper documents and registration since Polarn is the only one here who does, but that also makes me assume that he is the only one coming from a seriouse breeder. I take pride in the band.

I recently removed Punky's leg band because it got caught on one of her toys. I felt so bad for her and her leg was so swollen. The vet and I talked about it and made the decision to remove it. This was the cause of her injury. I did not want this to happen again and felt it was best to have it removed. I would like to find her breeder to find out how old she is. Does anyone know how I would go about locating her breeder?

Do you know the numbers that were on the band? Depending on your country ome organisations can help trace a breeder but it depends if they are registered or not, even if the breeder is registered they may get their bands elsewhere so there are no records. In the UK the parrot society runs such a scheme, it may also be worth posting the band number on a few forums to see if anyone recognises the format but again theres a strong chance that may not work also. You would be amazed the number of parrot owners who haven't made a note of their birds leg band let alone would recognise a similar one.

I wouldnt recognize a similar legband to Polarns unless I went and checked his papers to be honest. I have it on the papers that came from the breeder, I have it on the papers for the dna test and I also have it on his ensurance papers, but nope wouldnt really recognize it unless I looked. and as stated it depends on the country of origin of your bird. Here in sweden for example alot of the petbirds are required to have legbands and to be registered upon hatching as an attempt to stop the wildcought birds from being sold (all CITES A listed birds). Anyways most breeders that breed the mediumsized birds or up do register the birds and their bandnumbers, a bird here that isnt registered isn't worth as much and a breeder who doesnt mark them with a band or microchip is most likely to come across as someone you doesn't want to support anyways. And yes I have birds without a band but...I wasn't supporting a breeder as I got them, or the person I got em from...

In other coutnries it might be tougher though to track a bird by its band/chip number.

Oh another reason we do it here on the species that are close to not excist in the wild any more is to keep a register of related/unrelated birds etc. Not that I think that lil sweden ever will play a major role in building up a wild population again, for a couple of reasons... Anyways todo that we cant loose the enviorment they naturally live in wich is probably as much of a, if not more, cause for the wild population to decrease as capturing.

Thank you for responding to my post. The leg band has three letters with TX for state and three numbers. I may never know and that is fine but I would like to know how old Punky really is and know more about her. If not I am okay with it but thought it would be worth a try. She has been such a joy to us all.
