Clipping wings of 2 year old umbrella ?

Postby Coco puff » Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:59 pm

I have wondered about this and have lost 1 double yellow because I didn't close door tight and wind opened it and he flew into wind storm and was gone over building in seconds and gone .

I don't want to lose this bird but enjoy taking my birds outside without worry.

I'm a bit selfish and wonder if this hurts bird mentally our can they be as happy clipped.

Confused in boca..thx. Coco puff

Here's Michael's thoughts on the matter.

I tend to agree with his ideas. With my old cockatiel i thought you were supposed (i had not done as much research and there was limited awareness)to clip their wings since the breeder did but it was to traumatic so i never did again although it did end in tragedy due to my own failure to prevent her from flying away. The Senegal i now have came to me clipped but I'm letting them grow out. I feel it's more natural. People on here go both ways so ultimately you decide what you think is right.

Can you put something on the windows to secure them and train your bird to wear a harness for when you go outside? That is a much better solution to keeping your bird safe. Birds who fly are much healthier psychologically and physically. Definitely give the article posted above a good read, whilst I'm not 100% against clipping I believe there are very very few reasons/situations where restricting flight is the best option- most things can and should be worked around.

Whilst I can understand your hurt about your loss and you want to keep your bird as safe as possible it's highly unlikely the same thing will happen twice as you will be extra careful in the future. You have to keep in mind it was an accident but do bear in mind clipped birds can and do fly in the right circumstances so it is never a good idea to take a bird outside without a harness or travel cage.

If you live in a house I would much rather have bars around the porch and a second door to prevent accidents than having a clipped bird. But my mind is kind of set on the fact that you do not clip birds unless there are a medical reason for it. I much rather plan my housing around keeping flighted birds. This for me means double doors/ and window covers allowing me to open my windows without the birds being able to get out. Another option to having your porch redone is making your entrance inside having double doors where you can go in and out without having to open both doors at once.

I do believe birds are ment to fly. And my galah still tries (she isn't clipped but has had limited area to move and isn't strong enough to fly) and her trying means she climbs ontop of her cage and then jumps off. I tried giving her a ladder to be able to go in and out as she wants, but I can't let her unless supervised. Couse she falls like a rock and I need to be there to catch her. Don't want her to fall 6feet down.

Although a clipped bird (unless severely clipped) are usually able to cover small distances and break their falls, but if it's windy outside they fly a long way even when clipped, and having a clipped bird flapping about outside creates an easy target for predators.
