A Companion for my GGC?

Postby Kiyomi1793 » Mon Aug 27, 2012 6:43 pm

Hello guys (: I own a GGC and I've been thinking about getting a budgie once I move out with him. My number one reason for wanting to add another bird to my tiny flock is so Casper can have company while I'm working. Right now I'm in college so he's home with my family while I'm gone, but once I graduate and move out with him, I fear he'll get very lonely and develop problems since I'll be working long hours at the Vet Hospital. I don't want to leave him in the family home as they're ignorant about parrot care.

I do have a few concerns though. Will Casper's behavior change in any way (good or bad)? I don't want him to become less attached to me. He doesn't have any behavior problems other than not liking human strangers.

Also will the new budgie be able to bond to me or be too distracted by the other bird?

Thanks!

i don't know about yours but my :gcc: and from what i've read on here they are known to be bullies so i would avoid :budgie: or any other smaller bird.you should have no problem bonding with a new bird it's a problem if you get more than one at the same time.your :gcc: might want to spend more time with the new bird but will still want to be with you too.or you can just buy alot of toys to rip apart while your gone and leave tv or radio on to keep your :gcc: company while your gone i did that for many years with my :amazon: and he was fine when i started working.

When I introduced my 10 yr old rescue BCConure to the rest of my flock (a budgie, lovebird and tiel) she hadn't seen another bird in ten years! She climbed up on the Tiel's cage and regurgitated for him, and he bit her :( From then on she ignored them all. Once she adapted to me as her companion (which took a good many months) she preferred me to the other birds.

If you get a Budgie to keep your Conure company you may end up having to get that Budgie a cage friend. My Budgie loved to torment the other birds in an effort to get romantic. They wanted nothing to do with him....so, finally I had to get him a same-sex Budgie friend, and now he's happy.

All that being said, when one of my birds is in a separate room from the others, no matter how much they don't care when together, they call to each other when apart....so, there is a flock concern even when they tend to ignore each other when together.

Good luck with your decision, no matter which route you take :)
