Flaking beak. Solutions?

Postby Ursibear » Sun Sep 16, 2012 2:49 pm

Hello everyone :)
Another newbie question...
I've noticed my :redbelly: 's beak is kind of flaking. There are small layered chips, like scales, protruding from his beak.
I've seen them in other birds, and to be fair Sisu doesn't seem to be very bothered by it.
But there is this particular flake on his underbeak that has been getting bigger in the last couple of days. I am worried it might develop into a fissure :(
Is there any way of repairing the damage? Maybe vitamins or oil or.... whatever? Does anyone have experience with this?
Early thanks :)

I think its pretty normal and both vets I've spoken to say the same.
Some say its species dependant and others say it could be nutritional issues.
I guess if it persists and your not sure about it then get a vet check but its not something I worry about too much myself anymore. On my birds it seems to coincide with moulting more than anything.

When I first got Myrtle I took her for a checkup. The vet said it was normal and to just rub a tiny amount of olive oil into it.

I did at first but now she rubs her beak on my cheek so much that it is getting smooth.

My bird has a flakey beak too right now. I took him to the vet a couple weeks ago and asked my vet to look at my birds beak while I was there.
He told me that as long as the cracks are smooth lines it's normal if the lines start looking frayed on the edges (like in toe nail fungus in humans was the example the vet used) then I should bring him right back in.
To help smooth the beak my vet recommended a cement perch so he can rub his beak on it. I already had a cement perch but my bird rarely used it so I moved in front of his water dish and he uses it a little more now. Im not sure about oil or diet, I'v heard that carrots help but I'm not really sure.

Okay :) thank you!
I'll try the oil and the perch first. He really dislikes the vet visits!

Be very careful with the oil. Rub some into you finger then on the beak. If you get oil on a feather they will pluck it out.

Tried the oil.... He keeps licking it off as much as he can, i think he liked the flavor  i'll get him a couple of cement perches and see if it improves. This flake on his underbeak covers almost the whole thing.... He might get hurt if he gets tangled on something :(

If its that bad I think you need to see a vet tbh.
