Where to get a Budgerigar/Parakeet

Postby ishael » Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:13 pm

I'm planning on getting a budgie in December/January, and so I'm just researching now as to where I should get one.
I just got a job at Petland and the one I work at does have budgies, but I am wondering if that would not be the way to go. I am not blind to the fact that those budgies probably come from mass bird producers, but if I were to go with a breeder, would the quality/lineage of the budgie be any better? I really want to do it right with my next :budgie:, and I want to make sure I can get a budgie that will live a long time and not have health complications... I am really a novice when it comes to this, so if anybody could point me in the right direction, it'd be great. :)
Thanks in advance! :budgie:

Please adopt a budgie in a need of a home.

Because they are considered to be disposable starter birds there are many who are put up for sale in classified ads etc.

No one should be supporting the breeding of any parrot larger or small, especially not on the mass scale that budgies are produced.

I'm considering that as well... If I can find about a 4 month old so that I can tame it and such... That will be my challenge. I cannot find a breeder in my area that isn't hours away, and so I think browsing kijiji and the newspaper will be my best option.
This post was just to see if anyone had any other advice regarding where to get a budgie.

You can definitely tame an older one! Don't discount older parrots so quickly :]

Yes, I know... It't just that my first budgie only lived three years, and I'm afraid if I get one that is a couple years old I might not have it for a long time :c

Yes, they are very susceptible to tumours too. He got sick and died in a matter of hours... In my family we try our very hardest to make sure we can have an animal for its entire life and not have to re-home it or get one that doesn't have much time left, you know?
But thanks so much guys... I will now be considering getting an older budgie. :) :budgie:

Aw... Im sorry :(
But yes, I don't think a year or two in a budgie makes a difference. Like everyone stated above many of them need a good home, and it sounds like your family would be one :)

Awe thanks! After getting a dog and not socializing him properly and having a lot of trouble with his behaviour (I'm working with him but it will take a while) I am making sure that I am fully committed and knowledgeable before I get another pet so I don't have so much heartache. :)
Thanks so much guys, you've all really helped! :budgie:
