My senegal is depressed?

Postby HBP » Sat Sep 22, 2012 7:18 pm

I'm not really sure. I adopted him in May. He's 6 years old and from what I can tell he has had a very rough life. He's terrified of men but he has come round to me.
He doesn't really play with his toys. I bought him a whole lot of toys and they're still in really good shape months later. He has a play stand but he doesn't like it. He'd rather be in his cage. If I put him on the stand he'll fly over and go in his cage.
Is it possible he just never actually learned how to be a parrot? He spent 6 years living in a ferret cage without even any perches. Just hanging out on the floor or hanging off the bars and obviously had no toys. He has been to the vet and he is in tip top shape health wise. He has a good healthy appetite and I got him onto pellets & fresh foods off his seed.

He almost never makes any noise too. That may be a senegal trait? I don't know. I've never had a senegal before. The noise he does make is loud of course but it's so rare.
I love him the way he is but I hope he's happy! He doesn't pluck and he doesn't sleep all day. he just sits there on a perch but he is responsive when I talk to him and sing to him. Turns his head and such.

He is a stunted adult. You just broke him out of jail. Prisoners have a hard time adjusting to the real world and they knew it before they went into jail. Your birdie knows nothing else.

Play with him on the floor the best you can. Give him a paper wad or a piece of cardboard. Myrtle first played with a wooden clothes pin. Put a little bell in his cage and show him how to ring it. All of my birds like the plastic cat ball with a bell in it.

It is so heart breaking to wonder what all he went through and what he is thinking now. They do think and feel. It has been a year since I rescued Myrtle. I love her to bits and she shows me the same. I can only hope that she has forgotten her old house and owner. She is a very happy bird and a close companion to me.

Are his wings clipped. If so let them grow. Being able to fly can really change to personality and the way they look at the world around them.

thanks! I'll give it a go. His wings were clipped when I got him but I haven't clipped them and he is able to fly now.

Poor little guy. It makes me so mad and sad...

I like the idea of playing with him on the floor. Also, show him some friendly gestures, such as blinking your eyes at him and -- as weird as it sounds -- wiggle your tongue at him. Tongue wiggling is a way of communicating "I want to get to know you" with a parrot. Tiki and I do this all the time together and at each other, it's cute!

Also, if you haven't seen Michael's videos yet, check 'em out.
