just adopted another lorikeet but hes a plucker

i just adopted another rainbow lorikeet from a lady she was really nice and loved her bird and also gave me her cage. she was really nice but didnt understand the needs of a rainbow lorikeet and i got him about half an hour ago shes got him hand reared in 2006 and told me that hes only ever eaten apple and nectar powder and they dont let him out of the cage and didnt give him attention because they both worked.
so he hasnt had attention or a proper diet and has been plucking for a year thats why she was giving him away and he had a standard sized cage with so many perches that he could barely move and didnt have the right type of toys for a lorikeet.
ive never had a feather plucking bird before any suggestions. hell be getting let out everyday and have a proper diet with all sorts of foods and better toys im going to trick train him and hes already tame and very friendly.

Maybe with your positive changes for him that will help[sad lorys are very social and smart]Funny story -We have to keep a lock on his cage or he will let himself out.Well I missplaced the lock for a minute and was trying to find it and louie [said you can keep it off :D ]How smart is that! Back to your question -bathes are important and if you had an outdoor aviary that helps[My vet said you dont see to many plucked birds there.]Are your lorys similar ?Mines always sticking his tounge in my ear :D

My green cheek is a tail chewer. The amount of attention he receives per day has a lot to do with it, in addition to having a daily rotation of fascinating toys. His favorite toys are shiny beads that spin when you tongue them (he spent the first week with his water bottle just tonguing it). I recommend a bunch of foraging and tonguing toys, a training session first thing in the morning when he wakes up (I do this with Kiwi now before he eats and it seems to set the stage for a good rest of the day in terms of his anxiety), and a stimulating environment.

The biggest thing for Kiwi is pleasurable sights and experiences. Just hanging fruit up in his cage so he has to hang upside down to eat it makes him happier. When the weather is good, five minutes sitting in the tree in my front yard will result in a day of calm and no tail chewing.

It is challenging continuing to come up with new experiences like these, but I guess it's kind of our responsibility because they don't get to be in the wild.
