Help with Fledging an older lorikeet

Postby Pricey_boy » Thu Dec 27, 2012 12:18 am

Lloyds about 2 yrs old and has never flown and I've been waiting for his wings to grow back he's got about 95% back but still just drops to the ground while flapping his wings so I don't think his wings are strong enough so has anyone got info

Sounds like maybe he doesn't have the strength required to fly yet from not using his wings in such a long time. Maybe you could perch him on your hand and run with him to see if he tries to open up his wings and flap them, it won't get him flying right away but it might be enough exercise to re condition them and get their strength back.
I'd be interested in what others have to say here too since we just adopted an :irn: last week that's been clipped to the point she can't even do a soft decent let alone try to lift off so I'm guessing it'll take 6 months to a year before she gets her flight feathers back and will most likely end up in the same boat yours is in.

I would say same, muscles waste when they are not used, it will take a while for him to get his strength. Just keep practicing little hops close to the ground and gradualy increase the distance for a while and praise any flapping/wing spreading he does do.
Can you imagine how hard it woud be to start walking again after 2 years in a wheelchair? take it slow with him.

Gabriel, you can't teach a parrot that has atrophied muscles to fly (Michael's birds were babies). It needs physical therapy to strengthen those muscles and stretch the shrunken tendons first.

And so this is where the running around like a mad person with a bird flapping its wings comes in handy.

Before it hit the fan all around me, I was working with Rambo. I figured even if he never learned to fly it would be good exercise. Perched on one finger I would aim him toward the sofa. Lifting him up and down, he always flaps on the down, I would count to 3 and then say fly. He would have enough flapping going on to let go and fly to the sofa about 5 feet away.
There was a time when something scared them and both came through the door together. Rambo crash landed on the floor in the living room. He had managed to jump off the top of his cage, fly through the dining room and kitchen before he lost altitude and crashed.
