Are birds ok with aircons

Postby Pricey_boy » Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:14 am

I just moved into a new house with aircons and he's currently in the same room as an aircon because his cage won't fit through the doors so I need to take it apart but can't yet coz I'm to buisy. We're currently going through a week long heat wave in Western Australia and its the middle of summer

I cant see why not, since an aircon, afaik, only cools the air. A side effect is that it gets very dry though which can be bad for respitory functions in humans, so that will affect your birds as well - and faster. There might be other things I dont know about as well, but I dont think so.

You can counter the dry air though with a humidifier, or water trays to up the air humidity in the room.

i would think its fine - quite important actually, if you are living in a hot climate, esp. if you are going through a heat wave. birds kept indoors in hot weather are at special risk of overheating and dehydration.

if for some reason the AC is not up and running and you are in the midst of a heat wave, or any kind of hot weather, it is VERY VERY IMPORTANT that you have a large flat bowl of water, at least 1.5 inches deep, in their cages at all times. 24/7. they will drink from this, and jump in to take a bath to cool themselves as needed. this is essential to prevent dehydration and overheating.

when the AC is up and running, make sure that the cage is not directly in front of the AC vent - you dont want them to get a chill from the blast. i'd place a towel on that side of the cage. but still do keep that large bowl of water in there at all times, 24/7.

I actually have an aircon set up to start once the indoor temp hits 25 to cool it down, and if the temp goes below 20 the heater starts. Most days non of these ever starts since the heated floors in combination with me opening/closing windows to keep it a decent temp usually keeps the temp between 20 and 25. During the summers though the aircon starts up more frequently though but I still try taking advantage of the downstairs temp to keep the upper floor properly controlled but sometimes it isn't enough... So the aircon starts... I also got a humidifier set up that starts every now and then to up the moisture in the air. A big reason for this is for myself as we'll since when enough humidity in the air I feel my asthma a lot less.

Ok thanks everyone just wanted to make sure but the heats cooled down a lot from about 41 to 27. At our old house we didn't have an aircon so just wanted to be safe

Should be okay.. just make sure to keep the filter nice and clean and don't put the bird directly in the line of the AC. I live in Aus as well and on really humid or hot days aircon can be fantastic! my lorrie loves the ac, sits in front of the office ac and hops around. Just amke sure they have a place to escape the intensity of he ac and a bowl of shallow water to play in and of course drinking water too.

Hope the heatwave has died!

Just be sure, if it's the type that has water in it, that you use antibacterial solutions to clean the water regularly. The last thing you want is aerosolised Legionella in either your or your birds' lungs (but that's a problem for all evaporative aircons, not just bird-specific).
