Question - Is this poisonous?

Postby KeiKara » Mon Jan 07, 2013 9:11 pm

One of my parakeets managed to get out of his cage today. His mate had been out on the outside of the cage, under my supervision earlier in the day and I'm assuming he wanted to try it as well, while I was gone. I came back to find him on the floor in front of the cage, and more strangely, all sticky. It took me a little while, but I finally found that he apparently flew into a fly strip.
So he's covered in the sticky stuff off of a fly strip and he's trying to clean his feathers. I don't know how to help him without hurting him, he doesn't like being held on to obviously. Is it okay to just let him clean himself up, or will he get poisoning from the fly strip?

Can someone please shed some sort of light on this? I know that my budgie can't be the first to have had a run-in with a fly trap. And I feel so bad for him, he's obviously in shock and I don't want to make him any worse.

if were in your shoes i would be concerned about poisoning, from his attempts to clean himself. please take him to the vet immediately.

Straight to the vet please.
Don't try to remove the stickiness yourself because you could make it harder for the vet to get rid of it.
oh and remove your fly traps, flys are annoying I give you that but there are harmless compared with the risks you have just discovered.

I agree, the vet is the best place to take him at the moment.

Right to the vet and try to find the box the fly trap came in, for the vet to see what the bird has ingested.

For future try basil to get rid of flies, they hate the plant and makes a lovely smell in the house <: )
