Picky Conure

Postby wevans » Thu Jan 17, 2013 1:50 pm

I have an olive throated conure. The sweetest little bird ever. However its a task to get him to eat fruits and vegetables. He loves only tangerines, apples & sometimes carrots. Whenever I give him fruits/vegetables he throws them out the cage, in his water cup or not eat them at all. How do i get him to eat other fruits and vegetables? He will eat seeds and store bought higgins food.

I too have a picky little conure! Not so much with fruits, but with veggies. He refuses to eat any vegetable. My solution to this was bird bread. I know you can find it through Drs Foster and Smith, but I sometimes make my own as well. All it is is a cornbread mix and pureed veggies. Mix it all together and bake as directed. He goes crazy for it and has no idea I snuck veggies in his diet! Parrots may be smart, but I outsmarted this one! :gcc:

I have 2 GCCs and I was able to turn them on to fruit and veggies by cutting the fruit or veggies into very small pieces. For example, if I gave them apple pieces the same size that I give my amazon or caique, they would ignore them. When I cut the apple pieces into tiny conure bite sizes, they both eat them. The same is true of carrots, broccoli (I strip the sprouts off of the top of one bud for example), cauliflower and peppers. You can also try sprouts. Mine like sprouts and they are small and perfect for small conures.

Good luck!

I should specify, you need to add all of the other ingredients listed on the box as well, plus the puree :)

You may consider adding baby food fruits and veggies to the birdie bread.

Sometimes, my parrots just don't want a certain food at a certain time. So, keep trying. I read some parrots simply won't eat fruits and veggies that are not "naturally" in season.

My conure is pickier than the cockatoo. One thing neither has ever turned away is soybeans/edamame in the pods; check the frozen organic section of your grocer and be sure they aren't salted.
