Safe avian pots and pans~

Postby Utoomom » Tue Jan 22, 2013 3:01 pm

I have been using cast iron since E. came into my life, but frankly there tough to take care of.
I was wondering if any of you have heard about the new Green gourmet non-toxic, non stick
cookware? It appears to be birdie safe but I would like some opinions. Thanks.

Utoomom, I did find some info on those Green gourmet nontoxic pans online - the coating seems to be different from the usual Teflon, but theres no evidence yet that I can find that says conclusively that they are indeed safe for birds. here is one article about them (i think this is the brand that youre talking about? ) :

personally, from what I've read around, I would not use those Green pans, because I wouldnt want to take the chance. like Teflon, the material that they are coated with is still a non-stick chemical. in contrast, the pain-in-the-neck-to-clean stainless steel and cast iron has no coating, so theres no chemical on the pan surface that reacts with heat.

Thank you for that...call me paranoid, but I WILL NOT take any chances with my boy. Guess
I'll stick with cast iron. It's amazing how one has to totally change there lifestyle when
having such wonderful companions... :)

Cast iron is a pain to clean but get a pot scraper, it makes things soooo much easier. I got mine at New Seasons market, you can buy wooden and plastic ones. I use my own homemade soap to clean it with the scraper and it's clean in a few minutes.

Other than that, you can't go wrong with glass bakeware and stainless steel pots.

In my opinion, the only downside with cast iron is that they are so heavy. My wife doesnt like our biggest pan because its difficult to move about. But its amazing for cooking :)!

I like my cast iron pans because they cook so much better, but yes they weigh a ton which I hate and they also give the food a horrible taste. I have stainless steel but I can never get them to clean up properly, they take forever. :(

Anyone know anything about the cast iron pans with enamel? I figured they may be a compromise because I'm still cooking with the stainless to stop the awful taste but I have no idea if they are safe?

I personally dont mind the weight issue of cast iron. Thanks for the tips on cleaning them.
I dont use soap at all. Really I dont cook much, but also have my stainless steel ones for
boiling eggs, steaming veggies etc. And of course, my glass ware which is oven proof.

Also, I havent noticed any difference in taste when cooking on cast iron, my grill cheesses
come out great! The pans have been treated and since I live alone, I wash it off with warm
water and dry with thick paper towels. The other option which is a bit expensive is to
purchase pots and pans from brands like All Clad, Vicking and Kitchen Aid. But I still have
to do some more research on those brands/products. If any of you have them could you
please share?
Thanks for the input :)

Thats good, different story here though, teflons still really popular. Never heard of hard anodized pans though :S
