hello! i have an alexandrine parakeet female single. it is completed 12 years. till now we went to diferent states in every four years due to my father's transfers. actually she can't fly. we didn't clipped even. but the neighbour gave to us because they don't no how to handle. & (alexandrine parakeet)she is almost baby, having no feathers on body. i observed they didn't handled prperly and got problems in wings. so we kept her with us. now my doubt, after knowing about them is, how to prevent from laying eggs in future. i have to take any precautions??? i don't know if she really will lay egg in future, or may be not at all. just for furthur precautionally, as i can't take care of her eggs. so i want to prevent it, and keep her healthy being single only. :hatching:

it sounds like you really care about your bird, because you are thinking now about how to PREVENT problems like egg laying. thats really great to read.

egg laying is a complicated thing. I've heard that one way to prevent it is to make sure their environment does not stimulate them hormonally. i.e. make sure there are no nestbox or similar enclosed spaces that the bird can go into. also, another way to prevent it is to avoid overcuddling the bird. i think others may have further advice for you regarding this as well, but those would be the two most major things i can think of for now.

that the alex is 12 years old, and has no feathers likely means that it has plucked its own feathers out, esp. considering that she was not cared for properly by her previous owner. when you mention that she has problems in her wings, do you mean that she can't fly? or have they been clipped (with the ends cut off, but half of the feather missing) ? if the wing feathers have not been damaged by the birds plucking, there is hope that she can fly again. please post again and explain the "problem in her wings" part in greater detail.

also, have you taken her to an avian vet? this is a vet who specializes in birds . the vet would also be able to let you know if the feather plucking is medically related or not. i think a vet visit is definitely important immediately if you havent already gone, esp. considering the birds bad care under the neighbor you got her from. it will help put your bird on the right track healthwise, and the vet can also give you further advice on how to prevent egglaying in the future.

Friendtoparrots has already given some good advice but I just wanted to add this link from a user that posted with a similar question earlier. Her parrot had already laid eggs but that doesn't matter as preventative methods would be the same. I hope you find it of some use.

thats great, best wishes for your birds return to health and wellness.

let us know how everything goes. there's lots of info here about helping a bird regain flight after not flying for a while. please post again with any questions you might have about the birds wings, or flying, etc. or any other questions about its care.

all the best and good luck, and thanks for helping this bird :)

Postby alekha » Thu Feb 14, 2013 11:23 am

my parrot is alexandrine parakeet (green), (not ring neck), 13 years. finally she gave two eggs i.e. on 10th and 13th of february 2013. my question is how many eggs it will lay totally. we r taking care, by giving all type of natural food. she is fine, somewhat active. will be there any problem further, if it will lay any more eggs...???? i don't no, how many eggs maximum they lay exactly. & will it continue
again ????? no idea anybody..
