Clipping baby parrots

Postby Eurycerus » Fri Feb 08, 2013 2:41 pm

I am genuinely curious why people think it's a good idea to clip baby parrots. I am aware of reasons for clipping later on, like behavioral, danger, etc. (Not arguing whether right or wrong, just stating) I know there're strong opinions about clipping, but I am really just curious what you think their reasoning is behind clipping a baby because it seems to be a common practice.

i think people either don't know any better or they just don't want to deal with flighted babies. i just saw a video of an expert say " parrots are the only pets you must mutilate to keep." i was shocked that while she admitted it is mutilation she saw no other option for her birds or anyone elses.

Because it's easier to raise them in mills or stores when they can't fly. Because breeders don't know what they are doing. Because it's cheaper and less work. Because they get hurt and psychologically traumatized trying to fly which makes them give up trying. It teaches them helplessness and prepares them for the miserable life they'll be subjected to...

*sigh* That is so unfair! It amuses me that you called them a "sucky breeder". Love the language :]and true judging from her unprofessional behavior! Jeez!

Also I can't believe someone would agree that it's completely bad to do to a parrot and then just keep doing it!

It boils down to plain old ignorance and bad advice. I would wager more people wouldn't do it if they truly knew the repercussions, i.e., how much it hurts their bird.

Its like with old school farmers, they dont want to change the way they do things because their way is proven to work (for them). With farmers you can give them an incentive to change "if you keep your cows in bigger pens they will produce a better quality meat, which you will get more money for" Theres no incentives for the breeders to change their ways, they get whatever they want to charge anyway by showing people these cute little babies that wont (cannot) leave their sides, loyal like a dog right?
Its also laziness-oh and it saves them money on feeds, the less the bird moves the less food it needs to put on weight. Ok its not alot of money saved but when a breeders doing it with many clutches over many years it does add up.

The only incentive a breeder has to change their ways is peer pressure from welfare organisations and from people avoiding them and these dont happen enough...........

clipping of wings means, in my sense cutting a 1/2 hand of humans. this is very bad practice. i too have a pet(alexandrine parakeet) female. she can't fly. as she is having this problem from the child itself. may be due to rough handle by previous owners. they r not clipped either. thats why atleast she can jump (with little flight). very unfortunately in india we don't have special parrot vet for treatment. and some vet don't no even how to handle them. i wanted to leave her, but she will become dish to someother, & i can't tollerate that. so i always use to keep her outof the cage, in an open cupboard 90%. she likes to be free. at night times she likes to sleep inside the box again. so never clip, as they have rights to fly, else simply let them go in their way. :swaying:
