Nika does this funny loud breathing out noise every once in a while. It doesn't sound like a hiss but just a wheeze. She's definitely not sick and she's done it since she came to me. She'll only do one or so at a time and doesn't do it when angry nor when very content. I had thought that she picked it up from the pionus she lived with, since I know pionus wheeze when happy, but I have no idea what the pionus wheeze actually sounds like. Turns out I was wrong. Diggy does it too! Does anyone know what it means? Not sure if it's Senegal specific or not, since I haven't hung out with other parrots too much.
So Diggy does the one wheeze or so, thus confirming I was wrong, and that this is a Senegal behavior, but he also does this terrifying wheeze sound (slightly different from the one wheeze) while bobbing his tail sometimes for just a short period of time. I tried to not be over-reactive so I decided to just monitor him, and the results seem to be that he does it when excited/nervous, not indicating he's sick (great, now how the heck am I supposed to know when he's sick?! silly parrot) Anyone else experience anything like this? I am watching him and he seems completely fine (he also stopped after I walked away to give him space) other than freaking me out.
