Aviator Harness & Leash?

Postby Dasphatness » Thu Feb 28, 2013 1:48 pm

Iv been working with my Mulga, Melody, and was curious if anyone else had had good, or bad, results with the aviator harness? She likes to go outside, but there is always this manic fear that she will fly off with a gust of wind that always lurks in the back of my mind.

Id love to find a way to cure this fear, whilest also providing more natural recreational time with my companion. Worth the buy?

Michael has harness trained (with that harness) both of his parrots. He has an instructional guide on what he did: http://trainedparrot.com/Cape_Harness/

I bought mine from that exact place you linked to. I'm slowly working on it with Nika. If you are currently taking your parrot outside without a travel carrier or harness, I would suggest you never do that again. It is a really sad accident waiting to happen. Even clipped parrots can get a lot of lift and sail away.

Just an example, I heard this story through the rescue group. There was a gentleman with a clipped macaw who allowed his macaw for years (we're talking 20 plus) to hang out on his shoulder when he went to the parrot store. The parrot store owners expressed concern numerous times that his parrot could get lost or hurt but the gentleman insisted that for years he had been doing this and no harm had come. Then one day the parrot got spooked and flapped a distance and sadly was hit by a car. (the person telling the story was there when the macaw was killed) This was an avoidable tragedy. Poor baby... I would be devastated.

Be careful!

With that in mind, and completely understood btw, Im guessing il give it a try. She doesnt mind me touching her feet or wings or tummy, half the time shes trying to get me to scratch under her wings or the back of her neck anyways.

(Btw, our outdoor time always took place in an enclosed outside porch. The idea of losing my hen makes my stomach queezy.) Safety First! :swaying: <3 :swaying:

I think getting the thing on my sennie is the most challenging. She wiggles around too much
But once it's on, it's all well worth the trouble

Awesome. Mine is on order and should be here shortly. I have been practicing with an old ferret harness, which kinda looks similar to the aviator.(**never was used and was still new in package**)
She seems to be handling it quite well. Mostly like a new toy. Pretty relieved :D.
