DIY play gym?? Laptop keys destroyed

Postby Cockatielsongs » Wed Apr 10, 2013 12:54 am

Hey all!

Does anyone know a link to a DIY table top perch/ play tree thing. I don't mind buying one but it'll be great if I could make one instead. I turned my back on Bandit for 10 seconds and half the keys on my laptop were yanked off. So yeah, Bandit loves being with me a lot and I would rather he be destroying toys on a play gym, then compete against my fingers for the keys.
Thanks in advance

On my end it's my TV remote that has been dismantled. Ay yi yi. I feel ya.

I can't find any step-by-step plans, but here's a link to some images from right here on this forum:

I'm working on one now that I conceived on my own just by watching what my Sennie seems to enjoy doing most. Since two of my past birds rejected expensive, well-rated playgyms, I've just decided to wing it (no pun intended) and design my own. Good luck!

Sorry for the ridiculously late reply! Thanks for the link, I think I'll make one out of PVC piping stuff... anyways, I was on the laptop again and he was playing with his toys instead *phew* ... or so I thought... he threw his ball as far as he could so I had to get up and go get it, when I return...

:o

Lets just say I was trying to remember where the letter keys go correctly all night. I knew I should have been annoyed but I couldn't help smiling... cheeky, cheeky cockatoo. I'm positive that the ball was a diversion  naughty Bandit.

Keys were all over the floor :/ funny thing was when I was on the floor trying to put everything back together, he was running to me and giving me the keys all over the floor with his beak. You say he was being helpful, I say that he is thinking "Yayayayay lets do that again, here you go, put it back together for me!" *sigh*

Anyways, I am almost half way through the play gym, trying to make it more interesting than my laptop

Well, thanks to pop lingo at least you know the first few keys are "QWERTY"....

How funny that he brought you the keys! Maybe it was an apology of sorts. But you're probably right...once you get the board reassembled he knows he can have another crack at it. =D

PVC sounds like a good plan...easy to cut and work with. Mine is mostly wood. Just one short section of 7" PVC pipe to suspend as a crawl-through. Make sure to post a photo here once you're done, and I'll do the same. I like seeing what people come up with.

I'll be absolutely honest....I think the only way he's going to prefer the play gym to your laptop keys is if you spend hours playing with it! That's the point isn't it?...they want what we're playing with.

Not that I'm saying the playgym isn't a good idea....I look forward to hearing how you get on

True. Now I have to spend time marvelling over how thrilling the coconut looks. Bandit is the type of bird who want what I have. He wants to eat what Im eating. Play with what 'im playing with'. Go where I go. Talk when I talk. Look where I look. Hmmm

Would a key board in general be safe? Im sure I have an old broken one somewhere he can have...

....but it still wouldn't be the same as the keyboard you are using. Your missing the point ;)

Tbh i wouldn't be happy with my birds using an old keyboard as a toy, plus what happens when the old keyboard is destroyed will you keep having to buy new ones?

True *sigh* good news though, he stopped doing it, I wouldn't say completely. But his new found interest is my school text books. Honestly, I love for him to rip my algebra books to shreds ;) "my bird ate my homework" is more likely to happen then "my dog ate my homework." I'm taking him to the pet shop and he can choose out his toys. Maybe I'll get him his own book... oh dear, birds really are little two year olds :')

We have toys which are made of pressed organic paper in a parchment roll and they kind of unroll it. That stopped Eric's dissertation from being destroyed....
