Cotton candy?

Postby Lowerjumper » Sat May 24, 2014 10:51 pm

I have been reading about toys for my bird, and have read a lot of horror stories referring to birds getting hurt on "cotton candy"...

I have search this forum, as well as Googled my butt off, but cannot find any info.

What I am trying to find out is, is this a certain material? a certain brand? a general or specific type of something?

2nd question: What preference does your Senegal (or other) show towards toys. Is there a "Must have" toy for a Senegal?

Thanks so much for your time and reply.

My senegals don't play with anything, really. The hen would pull pieces out of small toys but she doesn't seem to have any preference as to what material because she does it to raffia, straw, wood, etc. But I don't even know what birdy cotton candy is...

I've never seen or heard of it either. Wonder if it's just a passing phase in chain pet stores?

My Senegal likes to shred those foraging toys.

I've no idea what cotton candy is either. I'm wary of fabrics/stringy stuff though. I only use untreated sisal on their playstand (never in the cages)

Cotton Candy is a preening toy by Jungle Talk. There are similar products by over companies, but Jungle Talk's is apparently cotton candy scented. It's dangerous because it is basically a toy made of tiny nooses since any one of those loose threads could strangle your bird. If you took the frayed, dangerous ends of a rope perch and made it a toy instead of throwing it out, you'd get this deathtrap.

Thank you for that, Calthesa! You are absolutely right about the danger and one would also wonder what was soaked in to make it smell like cotton candy, no?

Not a chance would I let my birds have one of those- not even under supervision I'm afraid. They were really popular here a few years back when I first keeping birds but I'm afraid I weigh the risks of being high so avoid anything like that.

different toy but a good example never the less, it also shows the the strands don't have to be really long to kill a bird. Don't open the link on the thread if your very sensitive to death though- the picture is quite upsetting.
