Does anyone else disinfect new toys from the pet store?

Postby booster » Mon Aug 04, 2014 1:47 pm

I'm probably a little over-cautious in this regard, but it seems like petstores are hazardous places with all of the people AND animal traffic that go through them. Does anyone else advocate washing new parrot toys before letting birds play with them? I'm sincerely afraid my birds will catch some sickness from unwashed toys (or anything new in their cage, for that matter).

Or am I doing my birds a disservice by not exposing them to new potential-bacteria and letting them build up an immunity? (I've read that kids develop more allergies and lower immunities if they don't have such exposure.)

I clean everything that comes from a pet store because I know that if there are other birds in the store then anything in the store is infected with anything that any of the birds have.

Yes I clean everything too to be safe, after that im more relaxed about toy cleaning though unless the birds are suspected to be sick or the toy is obviously soiled.

I DEFINITELY clean toys from pet stores. The ones I've been to have questionable birds and even more questionable care taking abilities. I would never risk it! However I am not too terrible with germs - I'm going to attempt to harness train my bird and will be taking him/herer outside often (though s/he probably will get bath time after that, haha) :danicing:

I recently purchased a steamer to clean grout, bathrooms and the list goes on and on. I used it to steam perches, toys and even new cages. You never know what gets on things in a manufacturing setting or even a warehouse. What I like about the steamer is that it works without chemicals. :gray:

I sanitize them in the dishwasher. Because of all the critters running past the cages, any toy that hits the floor gets put in the dishwasher.

I can't be over protecting them because they run with the dogs and cats and Myrtle claims any toy as hers.

I use a wire brush to scrub them with along with a little dish soap and then rinse them very thoroughly a couple of times and then dry before use.

I boil everything for a few minutes.
That really stopped me from buying toys that have dye. The water turns dark and inky.
Yes, I have used the dishwasher, too.
