Home made parrot toys

Postby hannah50942 » Sat Aug 16, 2014 3:10 pm

these are some of my Favorite handmade toys
1. car ride

If you have a small toy car at home that you use for you toys and don't use it anymore. use it for you bird. There are 2 ways to do this. 1 is to get your bird in/on the car and pull it along yourself. Or you could get a bit of wire, attach it to the front of the car, make a circle of wire (so you bird can fit his/her head in.) It will be like a horse carriage but a bird carriage. 1 or 2 birds in the car 1 or 2 birds pulling the car. :macaw:

2. Maze

you will need
. a bird
.3 to 4 medium sized boxes
.cage
. treats
Glue the boxes together in any shape and make a hole for your birds starting point. make as many rooms as you can but only one room is not a dead end. if he/she goes through all the right rooms he/she will end up in his/her cage. you can put treats in all the right rooms he/she has to go through.
If you bird plays in it over and over again he/she will know very well where to go and where the treats are so when he/she gets very good at it try taking them away in some rooms then he/she will get confused, and when he/she is super good take the treats away from all the rooms the treats were in and just put them in his/her cage as a reward. (Once you bird is in the maze close off the starting point so he/she does not gat out.) :meyers:

3. Basket ride

you will need
. a rope
. a basket
. a bird
tie one end of the rope to something firm and steady. straiten the rope and place the basket on top (but don't tie it on just sit it there) place you bird in and slowly move the basket along the rope with your bird in it he'll/she'll love it once he/she is use to it. :cockatoo:

4. Paper food

Cover you birds food with paper but leave a bit showing when you bird has figured that out you can wrap the paper around it so your bird has to rip it open to get to his food. and lastly as well as warping the bole up you can wrap some bits of food up into little balls and put little balls of paper in there so he has to figure out which one is foo and which one is paper :greycockatiel:

5. The tower of food

you will need
. 3 toilet rolls or one roll from tin foil or glad wrap
. bird
.treats
if you have toilet rolls glue them together in a tower shape like the roll from tin foil or glad wrap. make little cardboard draws and cut holes in the roll the size for the draws. put treats in them and close the draws. you bird will have fun trying to open them (close off the bottom and top of the roll with paper or cardboard have fun. :gray:

I just found an easy toy. Corn on the cob is in season. Wash the outside first. Pull the husk of leaving to leaves on the stem. Fluff leaves out and let it dry. They all love it.

Some of these ideas are truly dangerous and unkind. You can't use regular glue or cardboard tubes made with industrial glue (paper towel, toilet tissue), wires (a bird harness like a horse's made out of wire?!) or do anything that will stress them out (if you have to 'get the bird used to it' the bird is been stressed out in the process). Just because something is posted on a birdsite, it doesn't meant it's safe and good for the bird so, please, everybody, be careful and use your common sense.

I do appreciate your effort, but to be truthful I don't think any of these are safe for the birds and definitely no paint of any kind. The biggest problem with adhesives and paints is that none of them are tested with birds in mind only mammals. Birds are as a general rule of thumb about 20 times more sensitive to the effects of toxins than are humans.
