Does it matter how I hang the toys?

Postby LJ4RockPebbler » Sun Oct 05, 2014 12:58 am

Just got my bird and was wondering if their was a preferred way of hanging her toys in the cage. Also, are rope perches safe?

As for hanging toys in the cage it sort of depends on the toy ie. how long is the toy, how will the bird play with it, is there one part of the toy that attracts the bird more than another part. I hang from the top of the cage as well as down the sides depending on the toy , the bird and how the bird uses the toy.
Rope perches are not noted for there safety, I, however do have a couple of them and I watch to see if my bird hangs a nail in them if so then I don't use that perch with that bird, Also I keep any frayed ends or other places trimmed down to as short as I can. I think that by doing this that my rope perches are relatively safe and have not yet had any problems. I could be fooling myself with a false sense of security.

Scary thought but thanks for the heads up. How often should the nails be trimmed? Also too, is it true that the fumes from non stick cookware and aerosol sprays are deadly to parrots? Thanks again.

Yes that is true and here is a link for you, it contains a list on the second page of many different things that are safe or toxic to your bird, it covers woods for chewing and perching, plants, foods and household products. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=12521 This is one of the better lists that you can find.

Actually I don't trim my birds nails. I use wooden perches and perches that have sand embedded on the sides but not on top and then the birds do the rest. I don't modify the bird to make a product safe for them, I change the product to fit the birds needs.

Branches with the bark on them also help with keeping nails from overgrowing.

Just don't decide to make your own toy with a shoe lace that strings through the toy item twice to make a loop. They can get caught in it.

Also I have seen birds with those quick links stuck underneath their beaks, one even punctured through to the mouth. So if you use them, secure them tightly, and if your bird learns to unscrew them they are off the table.

Thanks for this one, I have never heard of that happening, much less ever seeing it, but thinking on it a little it makes perfect sense to me. Again thank you.
