Re: Best bird safe wood and where to buy it?

Given the sources that you have on a local level you could use balsa wood or you could use white pine or fir. Of course none of these woods can be treated with any chemicals. Here is a link to a listing of many items both toxic and non toxic to your bird including plants, trees, woods, foods and household items. The list begins on the second page of postings. Hope this will help you.
Oh, almost forgot sisal rope is considered the best rope to use also palm fronds and sea grass. you may be able to get the materials for making wicker furniture or baskets from your hobby store that should also be safe to use.

I use lilac wood the most, it is so easy to work with too. My yard is full of lilacs but they are usually easy to find from a neighbor and they need pruniing every year so most people have some to spare, just make sure they dont chemically treat it.

I buy apple wood sticks from the rabbit gerbil section of pet store. They are cheap and have a hole drilled through already to string. My jardine likes to peel the bark off of them. Good size for conjure. Also they have shaped wood with hole for stringing. Again cheap but also easy for my jardine to break. I just use shoe laces to string it, but that's me. He will chew on anything he gets his beak on...so, I believe the untreated lumber from home depot is a safer alternative from, say, my kitchen cabinet doors...

I never thought about the sticks of wood that are made for hamsters and gerbils, I think that is a good call, Dana. Also the untreated lumber is always better than having them eat your kitchen cabinets and cheaper too. Thank you.
