Strongly favored toy -- good or bad?

Postby entrancedbymyGCC » Mon Jun 21, 2010 3:19 pm

Scooter has been gradually learning to play with more types of toys, but he has one especial favorite that he clearly likes more than all others. It is a transparent orange acrylic "wavy saucer" with beads inside that rattle when he "attacks" it. Fortunately, it is very durable, and I even ordered a second one as a backup because it is the only toy he's that into. I do rotate it in and out to keep it fresh, but I'm a little concerned that he's so attached to it it is almost necessary! Yesterday he was pestering the heck out of me wanting to come out of the cage all the time, when I finally rotated that toy in for him (during a period in which he was quiet so as not to reward the pestering), I swear his eyes lit up and he went to town on it and was content until I actually had time to spend with him.

That's great that you found something he really loves! I don't think it's a problem as long as he's not guarding it or becoming territorial over it. As long as he still wants to interact with you and he's not becoming possessive of it you should be ok.

That's just so cute!! I just love the fact each parrot is so unique in its own special way!

My wife has started making toys for our birds just for the fun of it and she's been using Macrame for the string/rope part of the toys. Our conures have been going crazy over them. I think its the Macrame Knots that they find of interest. The up side is they love playing with them so much so that they pretty much stop mating (great contraceptive!) and focus on the toys. It takes them about a week to totally destroy her toys LOL

I honestly think its a very positive thing for Scooter to have something he really loves to play with.

I think it may just take time to figure out what a bird is going to like! My husband informed me this morning that I don't need to spend any more money on toys for Scooter. He had him out in the living room watching TV and taking vitamins and apparently a half-empty pill bottle is WAY FUN! He knocked it over and was apparently rolling it all over the table making rattling noises and really going to town.

I am beginning to deduce that Scooter favors orange things that rattle. Guess I better not change my hair color.

what is it with parakeets and bells? Petey is addicted to his bells, i have several placed in there for him and he goes around to each one, but spends time with a favorite one the most. these are the bells with the little clapper hanging inside. he talks to them, pecks at them, and sticks his head and face inside them. even though he had Beaner as his best buddy, the bells were his and what he loves most. Beaner wasn't crazy for the bells at all.
9 times out of 10, you will look over there and Petey has his bell on his head or has his face in it.
whats up with that? is it not a good thing?
i had been trying to rehome these guys for a while now, but since Beaner flew away i only have him.
my plan is to give him back to Petco where he will be in a huge enclosure with lots of buddies
but no bells. which would be better, being part of the flock or hanging out with your bell?
anyone want a cute little budgie?
